SUMMARY:Claremont Topology Seminar: Julian Chaidez (USC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Quantum 4-Manifold Invariants Via Trisections \nAbstract: I will describe a new family of potentially non-semisimple invariants for compact a 4-manifold whose boundary is equipped with an open book. The invariant is computed using a trisection\, along with some additional combing data\, and a piece of algebraic data called a Hopf triple. The relationship with other recent works on non-semisimple 4-manifold invariants\, like the work of Costantino-Geer-Patureau-Mirand-Virelizier\, is not yet clear. This talk is based on joint work with Shawn Cui (Purdue) and Jordan Cotler (Harvard).

SUMMARY:Claremont Topology Seminar: Reginald Anderson (CMC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Cellular resolutions of the diagonal and exceptional collections for toric Deligne-Mumford stacks (Continued) \nAbstract: Beilinson gave a resolution of the diagonal for complex projective space which yields a strong\, full exceptional collection of line bundles. Bayer-Popescu-Sturmfels generalized Beilinson’s result to a cellular resolution of the diagonal for what they called “unimodular” toric varieties (a more restrictive condition than being smooth)\, which can also be extended to smooth toric varieties and global quotient toric DM stacks of a smooth toric variety by a finite abelian group\, if we allow our resolution to have cokernel which is supported only along the vanishing of the irrelevant ideal. Here we show implications for exceptional collections of line bundles and a positive example for the modified King’s conjecture by giving a strong\, full exceptional collection of line bundles on a smooth\, non-unimodular nef-Fano complete toric surface.

SUMMARY:Claremont Topology Seminar: Robert Bowden (HMC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Chebyshev Threadings in Skein Algebras for Punctured Surfaces \nAbstract: Skein algebras are algebras of links in a surface quotiented by diagram-based equivalence relations based on the Kauffman bracket. In the case of surfaces with punctures\, the skein algebra is generated by links as well as arcs between the punctures\, and there are additional skein relations for the arcs. We examine the algebraic structure of the punctured case\, finding a description of the central elements at certain roots of unity. Our construction is closely related to the one for the usual skein algebra\, where central elements come from threading links by Chebyshev polynomials.

SUMMARY:On the Non-Orientable 4-Genus of Double Twist Knots\, Part II: Lower Bounds (Jim Hoste\, Pitzer College)
DESCRIPTION:The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot K is the smallest first Betti number of any non-orientable surface in the 4-ball spanning the knot. It is defined to be zero if the knot is slice. In joint work with Patrick Shanahan and Cornelia Van Cott\, we attempt to determine the value of this invariant for double twist knots. In an earlier talk at this seminar\, I presented methods of determining upper bounds by explicitly describing non-orientable spanning surfaces. In this talk I describe methods for establishing lower bounds using linking forms on 4-manifolds and a major result of Donaldson. These methods suffice to compute the non-oprientable 4-genus of several infinite families of double twist knots.

SUMMARY:Cusps in Convex Projective Geometry (Martin Bobb\, IHES)
DESCRIPTION:Convex real projective structures generalize hyperbolic structures in a rich way. We will discuss a class of manifolds introduced by Cooper Long and Tillmann\, which include finite-volume cusped hyperbolic manifolds and other manifolds with well-controlled ends. These manifolds have nice deformation theoretic properties\, and we will conclude with an existence theorem for novel structures on some hyperbolic manifolds.

SUMMARY:Kauffman Bracket Skein Modules and their Structure (Rhea Palak Bakshi\, ETH Zurich)
DESCRIPTION:Skein modules were introduced by Jozef H. Przytycki as generalisations of the Jones and HOMFLYPT polynomial link invariants in the 3-sphere to arbitrary 3-manifolds. The Kauffman bracket skein module (KBSM) is the most extensively studied of all. However\, computing the KBSM of a 3-manifold is notoriously hard\, especially over the ring of Laurent polynomials. With the goal of finding a definite structure of the KBSM over this ring\, several conjectures and theorems were stated over the years for KBSMs. We show that some of these conjectures\, and even theorems\, are not true. In this talk I will briefly discuss a counterexample to Marche’s generalisation of Witten’s conjecture. I will show that a theorem stated by Przytycki in 1999 about the KBSM of the connected sum of two handlebodies does not hold. I will also give the exact structure of the KBSM of the connected sum of two solid tori.

SUMMARY:Towards Knot Homology for 3-Manifolds (Aaron Mazel-Gee\, California Institute of Technology)
DESCRIPTION:The Jones polynomial is an invariant of knots in R^3. Following a proposal of Witten\, it was extended to knots in 3-manifolds by Reshetikhin-Turaev using quantum groups. Khovanov homology is a categorification of the Jones polynomial of a knot in R^3\, analogously to how ordinary homology is a categorification of the Euler characteristic of a space. It is a major open problem to extend Khovanov homology to knots in 3-manifolds. In this talk\, I will explain forthcoming work towards solving this problem\, joint with Leon Liu\, David Reutter\, Catharina Stroppel\, and Paul Wedrich. Roughly speaking\, our contribution amounts to the first instance of a braiding on 2-representations of a categorified quantum group. More precisely\, we construct a braided (infinity\,2)-category that simultaneously incorporates all of Rouquier’s braid group actions on Hecke categories in type A\, articulating a novel compatibility among them.

SUMMARY:Systematically Detecting Flypes and Hexagonal Mosaics (Hugh Howards\, Wake Forest University)
DESCRIPTION:We talk about building knots using mosaics which were as introduced as a way of modeling quantum knots by Lomonaco and Kauffman and a newer variant\, hexagonal mosaics\, introduced by Jennifer McLoud-Mann. In the process we find a new bound on crossing numbers for hexagonal mosaics and find an infinite family of knots which do not achieve their hexagonal mosaic number while also in a projection which achieves their crossing number\, extending a result of Lew Ludwig et al. In the process we introduce a new tool which makes it easier to systematically recognize when two knots differ by a sequence of Flypes (for example\, giving a process to recognize that the Perko Pair were in fact the same knot). No background with mosaics or flypes is necessary. This is joint work with Jiong Li* and Xiotian Liu* (* indicates undergraduate students).

SUMMARY:Two-Bridge Knots Admit no Purely Cosmetic Surgeries (Thomas Mattman\, California State University\, Chico)
DESCRIPTION:(Joint with Ichihara\, Jong\, and Saito). We show that two-bridge knots admit no purely cosmetic surgeries\, ie no pair of distinct Dehn surgeries on such a knot produce 3-manifolds that are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Our argument is based on a recent result by Hanselman and a study of signature and finite type invariants of knots as well as the SL(2\,\C) Casson invariant.

SUMMARY:On Invariants for Surface-Links in Entropic Magmas via Marked Graph Diagrams (Seonmi Choi\, Kyungpook Natl U\, Korea)
DESCRIPTION:M. Niebrzydowski and J. H. Przytycki defined a Kauffman bracket magma and constructed the invariant P of framed links in 3-space. The invariant is closely related to the Kauffman bracket polynomial. The normalized bracket polynomial is obtained from the Kauffman bracket polynomial by the multiplication of indeterminate and it is an ambient isotopy invariant for links. In this talk\, we reformulate the multiplication by using a map from the set of framed links to a Kauffman bracket magma in order that P is invariant for links in 3-space. We define a generalization of a Kauffman bracket magma\, which is called a marked Kauffman bracket magma. We find the conditions to be invariant under Yoshikawa moves except the first one and use a map from the set of admissible marked graph diagrams to a marked Kauffman bracket magma to obtain the invariant for surface-links in 4-space.

SUMMARY:Topology Seminar -- Matthew vonAllmen
DESCRIPTION:Title: Untying Knots with Neural Nets \nAbstract: Neural networks can transform 3-dimensional data in a manner reminiscent of an ambient isotopy. With some modifications\, a neural network can be trained to manipulate the vertices of a knot while respecting its topological structure. We use the discrete Mo ̈bius energy as a loss function to incentivize a neural network to smooth out curves in a knot\, without performing illegal operations. By introducing unconventional neural network layers\, we are able to untwist highly tangled polygonal knots until a human can visually recognize whether they are topologically equivalent to the unknot.

SUMMARY:Topological index and square plat projections (Puttipong Pongtanapaisan)
DESCRIPTION:The bridge distance and the topological index are measures of the complexity of the bridge splitting of a knot. In 2016\, Johnson and Moriah gave a formula for the bridge distance of the canonical bridge sphere of a knot in a highly twisted plat projection in terms of the height and the width of the plat. Essentially\, if the plat is high\, then the bridge distance is high and the topological index equals one. Not much is known about the topological index of the bridge sphere when the plat is not high. In this talk\, I will show that if the plat is square\, then the topological index equals two. This is joint work with Daniel Rodman.

SUMMARY:Topology Triple-Header!
DESCRIPTION:This triple-header of topology talks will include three speakers: \nFirst\, Hyeran Cho from The Ohio State University will speak about Derivation of Schubert normal forms of 2-bridge knots from (1\,1)-diagrams. \nIn this talk\, we show that the dual (1\, 1)-diagram of a (1\, 1)-diagram (a.k.a. a two pointed genus one Heegaard diagram)\nD(a\, 0\, 1\, r) with 1 ≤ r < 2a + 1 and gcd(2a + 1\, r) = 1 is given by D(1/2r\, 0\, 2a+1-1/r\, 1/r) when 1/r is even and by D((2a+1−r)/2\, 0\, r −1\, r −1) otherwise\,  where 1/r is the multiplicative inverse of r modulo 2a + 1. We also present explicitly how to derive a Schubert normal form of a 2-bridge knot from the dual (1\, 1)-diagram of D(a\, 0\, 1\, r) using weakly K−reducibility of (1\, 1)-\ndecompositions. \nSecond\, Suhyeon Jeong from Pusan National University will speak about Psybrackets\, Singular Knots and Pseudoknots.: \nIn 2010\, a pseudodiagram was introduced by Ryo Hanaki. A pseudodiagram is a knot or link diagram where we ignore over/under information at some crossings of the diagram. This definition is motivated by applications in molecular biology such as modeling knotted DNA\, where data often comes inconclusive with respect to which crossing it represents. In 2012\, Allison Henrich\, Rebecca Hoberg\, Slavik Jablan\, Lee Johnson\, Elizabeth Minten\, and Ljiljana Radvić extended this idea to a pseudoknot and pseudolink. A pseudoknot (or pseudolink ) is an equivalence class of pseudodiagrams modulo pseudo-Reidemeister moves. In this talk\, we would like to introduce a psybracket consisting of two maps <\, \, > c \, <\, \, > p : X × X × X → X satisfying some axioms derived from pseudo-Reidemeister moves. By using this\, we define an invariant\, called the psybracket counting invariant\, of oriented singular knots and links and pseudolinks. This is a joint work with Jieon Kim and Sam Nelson. \nFinally\, Minju Seo from Pusan National University will speak about Quandle coloring quivers of surface-links.:  \nIn 2018\, K. Cho and S. Nelson introduced the quandle coloring quiver of an oriented knot or link diagram\, which is a quiver structure on the set of quandle colorings of a knot or link diagram. Also\, they gave a new invariant\, called the in-degree quandle quiver polynomial\, from the quiver structure. A surface-link is a closed 2-manifold smoothly embedded in R 4 or S 4 . A surface-link can be presented by a marked graph diagram with specific condition\, and a marked graph diagram is a generalization of a knot or link diagram. In this talk\, we introduce a quiver structure on the set of quandle colorings of a marked graph diagram\, and compute the in-degree quandle quiver polynomials of some marked graph diagrams. This is a joint work with J. Kim and S. Nelson.

SUMMARY:Topology Seminar: Jesse Levitt (USC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Understanding Structure in the Single Variable Knot Polynomials \nAbstract: \nWe examine the dimensionality and internal structure of the aggregated data produced by the Alexander\, Jones\, and Z0 polynomials using topological data analysis and dimensional reduction techniques. By examining several families of knots\, including over 10 million distinct examples\, we find that the Jones data is well described as a three dimensional manifold\, the Z0 data as a single two dimensional manifold and the Alexander data as a collection of two dimensional manifolds. We confirm each of these structural results using two independent ‘big data’ techniques. The ability to consider knots in this manner illuminates several interesting relationships that I hope to discuss at the conclusion of the talk. This collects joint work with Mustafa Hajij and Radmila Sazdanovic.

SUMMARY:Topology Seminar: Sam Nelson (CMC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Biquandle Brackets and Knotoids \nAbstract: Biquandle brackets are a type of quantum enhancement of the  biquandle counting invariant for oriented knots and links\, defined by a set of skein relations with coefficients which are functions of biquandle colors at a crossing. In this talk we use biquandle brackets to enhance the biquandle counting matrix invariant of knotoids. This is joint work with Neslihan Gugumcu (Izmir Institute of Technology\, Izmir\, Turkey) and Natsumi Oyamaguchi (Shumei University\, Tokyo\, Japan).

SUMMARY:A (Z⊕Z)-family of knot quandles (Jim Hoste\, Pitzer College)
DESCRIPTION:Suppose K is an oriented knot in a 3-manifold M with regular neighborhood N (K). For each element γ ∈ π 1 (∂N (K)) we define a quandle Q γ (K; M) which generalizes the concept of the fundamental quandle of a knot. In particular\, when γ is the meridian of K\, we obtain the fundamental quandle. The collection of all such quandles gives a (Z⊕Z)-family of quandles. If K is a knot in M and γ is a primitive element\, then we show that there exists a knot K’ in a 3-manifold M’ such that Q γ (K; M ) ∼= Q μ (K’ ; M’) where μ is the meridian of K’ . Starting with a partially framed link L in the 3-sphere where the framed components give a surgery description of the manifold M and a single unframed component represents K we can derive a similar surgery description of K’ in M’ . Using results of Fenn and Rourke\, we may then use this description of K’ to record a presentation of the quandle Q γ (K; M). We describe a number of examples of these quandles for knots\nin various manifolds.

SUMMARY:Enhancements of the quandle coloring invariant for knots (Karina Cho\, Harvey Mudd College)
DESCRIPTION:Quandles are algebraic structures that play nicely with knots. The multiplicative structure of finite quandles gives us a way to “color” knot diagrams\, and the number of such colorings for a given knot and quandle is called the quandle coloring invariant. We strengthen this invariant by examining the relationships between the colorings\, which are given by endomorphisms. This can be visualized using a directed graph that we call the quandle coloring quiver. We will show that the quandle coloring quiver is a strict enhancement of the quandle coloring invariant and discuss further enhancements of this invariant that arise from quandle cohomology. This work is a senior thesis project under the advising of Sam Nelson.

SUMMARY:The Roger-Yang Arc Algebra (Helen Wong\, CMC)
DESCRIPTION:  \nBased on geometric considerations\, J. Roger and T. Yang in 2014 defined a version of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra for punctured surfaces that includes arcs going from puncture to puncture. We’ll provide a brief survey of known results about this arc algebra. In particular\, I’d like to mention a recent algebraic result whose proof uses  “generalized” corner coordinates to describe arcs on a triangulated surface. This is joint work with Han-bom Moon. \n

SUMMARY:Simplicial Complexes\, Configuration Spaces\, and "Chromatic" Invariants (Andrew Cooper\, NC State)
DESCRIPTION:Given a space $X$\, the configuration space $F(X\,n)$ is the space of possible ways to place $n$ points on $X$\, so that no two occupy the same position. But what if we allow some of the points to coincide? \nThe natural way to encode the allowed coincidences is as a simplicial complex $S$. I will describe how the configuration space $M(S\,X)$ obtained in this way gives rise to polynomial and homological invariants of $S$\, how those invariants are related to the cohomology ring $H^*(X)$\, and what this has to do with the topology of spaces of maps into $X$. \nI will also mention some potential applications of this structure to problems arising from international relations and economics. \nThis is joint work with Vin de Silva\, Radmila Sazdanovic\, and Robert J Carroll
