DESCRIPTION:This GEMS session will be facilitated by Evan Rosenman from Claremont McKenna College \n\n\n\nTitle: Fair Votes? The Mathematics of Elections and Redistricting\n\n\nAbstract: How do we know if an election is fair? In this interactive session\, we’ll explore how math helps us answer that question. Students will experiment with drawing voting districts to see how drawing different district boundaries can change outcomes. They will also learn about alternative voting systems\, such as ranked choice voting and approval voting\, and how these might yield more representative outcomes than traditional “first-past-the-post” elections. Along the way\, we’ll encounter ideas like Condorcet winners\, and see how Statistics can help us learn about voting patterns from limited data. Join us to discover how geometry\, algorithms\, and probability shape modern elections.

SUMMARY:GEMS March 7th Session
DESCRIPTION:This GEMS session will be facilitated by Robbie Tran from Claremont Graduate University.\n\n\nTitle: Formulating Equations as a Medium for Digital Art and Design\n\n\nAbstract: \nAs we can utilize letters and words to write out mathematics (e.g. 2+2=4 can be written as “two plus two is equal to four”)\, this session seeks to explore the near reverse: how can we use mathematics to some extent graph letters and words? Rather\, could we formulate equations of curves that visually resemble text on a 2D-plane? If we include both conventional and nonconventional shapes too\, this question is not only an interesting curiosity\, but a question whose answer is quite prevalent in programs for computer graphics\, animation\, digital art\, and font design!\n\nWe will approach this question by highlighting and constructing Bézier curves\, which can approximate smooth curves by control (anchor) points on the plane. Furthermore\, this session will showcase the mathematics of these curves\, covering polynomials\, linear interpolation\, and parametrization (no prior knowledge assumed). Ultimately\, we will simulate how graphs of Bézier curves can be drawn for various letters and shapes by applying a recursive method called de Casteljau’s algorithm. Join us to explore an example of how mathematics can serve as a gateway to art and design!

DESCRIPTION:This GEMS session will be facilitated by Professor Bahar Acu from Pitzer College.\n\n\nTitle: The Hole Truth: When is a Coffee Mug a Donut?\n\nAbstract:  In mathematics\, topology is the study of properties of shapes that remain unchanged when shapes are bent\, stretched\, or deformed—so long as they aren’t torn or punctured. To a mathematician studying topology\, a donut and a coffee cup (with a handle) are considered the “same” shape because one can be continuously deformed into the other without cutting or gluing.\n\n\nIn this interactive session\, we will explore the concept of shape equivalence by counting holes—an essential feature in topology. Using Play-Doh and Wikki Stix\, we will model different shapes\, test their flexibility\, and determine whether they can be transformed into one another. Join us for a hands-on journey into the fascinating world of topology\, where a simple twist in perspective can redefine how we see the shapes around us!

DESCRIPTION:This GEMS session will be facilitated by Professor Lenny Fukshansky from Claremont McKenna College. \nTitle:  From Knapsacks and Changing Coins to Geometry\n\nAbstract:  Suppose you have a bag that can hold a fixed amount of weight\, and you are trying to fill it with several types of objects of different weights and prices. The goal is to maximize the value of your bag. How do you do it? This is a notoriously difficult optimization problem\, which often arises in resource allocation with financial constraints. Another famous optimization problem asks what amount of change can you give with coins of prescribed denominations? Surprisingly\, not only are the two closely related to each other\, they both can be restated in the geometric language of polygons\, points with integer coordinates\, and their higher-dimensional generalizations! We will discuss these important problems and their beautiful connection to a classical problem in geometry: how can we count the number of integer points in a fixed polygon? The answer is given by the celebrated 19th century theorem of Georg Alexander Pick\, who proved a remarkable formula for this number in terms of the area and perimeter of the polygon. We will talk about Pick’s theorem and perform a hands-on exploration of this fascinating area of geometry.

SUMMARY:GEMS Workshop: The Mathematics of Reapportionment and Census Data with Professor Adolfo Rumbos of Pomona College
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: The Mathematics of Reapportionment and Census Data \nEvery ten years\, the United States Census Bureau conducts a count of all persons living in the United States; one of those population counts will be carried out this year (2020). This Census is mandated by the US Constitution; it counts all people residing in the United States\, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. The data collected from the Census are used to make sure that everyone is equally represented in our political system and that government resources are allocated fairly. For instance\, Census counts are used to determine how many congressional seats a state receives. This is known as reapportionment. In this workshop we explore the Mathematics of reapportionment. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nTOPIC: Superheroes vs. Supercomputers \nSuperheroes like Wonder Woman\, Black Panther\, Superman\, and Captain Marvel\, just to name a few\, all have “super” power and they save the world from “super”-villains. Well\, just one catch–they are not real. In our real world\, there are computers built for super power to save the (real) world. In this talk\, you will be introduced to “super”computers built to defeat “super”villains (i.e.\, super difficult problems). DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Working Together without a Leader \nBees all work together by communicating and obeying the orders of the Queen. Other animals gather in swarms\, flocks\, or schools and move in complicated ways without any leader at all. In a school of fish\, each one is identical and they all follow the same simple rules. Yet they still manage to form tight bait balls and make sharp turns in unison. So a school of fish is more than just a group of fish; it is greater than the sum of its parts.
