Nicole Fider, UC Irvine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Candidate for Assistant Professor in Mathematics, Scripps College<\/p>\n<p><b>A surprising application of mathematics:\u00a0 How to name a color<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Your brain likes patterns and categories; by grouping related ideas together, it can store and recall information quickly.\u00a0 Real-life continuous domains (like <i>time <\/i>and <i>taste<\/i>) are inherently composed of infinitely many points of information, which your brain segments into finitely many categories for convenience (such as <i>morning\/afternoon\/evening\/night<\/i>, or <i>sweet\/sour\/salty\/bitter<\/i>).\u00a0 This phenomenon is well-documented and is a topic of interest in the behavioral, cognitive, and social sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The set of colors is another example of a continuous domain, which in English is segmented into categories called \u201cblue,\u201d \u201cred,\u201d \u201cgreen,\u201d etc.\u00a0 In this talk, I discuss how we apply mathematics \u2014including calculus and linear algebra\u2014to real-world data to study the occurrence of different categorizations schemes of the color space.\u00a0 I then outline several related open projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Monday, February 18<\/p>\n<p>4:00-4:50pm<\/p>\n<p>Balch 218<\/p>\n<p>Scripps College<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FMI contact: ctowse@scrippscollege.edu<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Candidate for Assistant Professor in Mathematics, Scripps College A surprising application of mathematics:\u00a0 How to name a color Your brain likes patterns and categories;
