Title:<\/strong> Injustice, Inequity, and Inequality: Lessons at the Intersection of Mathematics, Epidemiology, and Racism<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/strong>:The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed existing health inequities for communities of color in the United States. Racism is a known structural cause of these health inequities. Counterfactuals are essential to our understanding of causal relationships in epidemiology, but how do you formulate a counterfactual for racism? This talk will explore the basis for counterfactual thinking in epidemiology and the ways in which we need to \u201cre-imagine\u201d counterfactuals to address one of society\u2019s longest standing issues: racism.<\/p>\n

Nadia N. Abuelezam, Sc.D. is an epidemiologist and assistant professor at the Connell School of Nursing. Dr. Abuelezam was trained in infectious disease epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She graduated from Harvey Mudd College in 2009 with a B.S. in Mathematical Biology.<\/p>\n

The Harvey Mudd College Department of Mathematics established the Moody Lecture Series in honor and memory of Michael Moody, who chaired the department from 1996-2002.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
