Title: Traditional Applied Math, and then, Working with High Dimensional Biological Data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/p>\n

\n

I will give an overview of my interests in two parts. The first part will be on passive tracer problems \u2013 with the goal of finding formulas of descriptive statistics (mean, variance, skewness) for a solute distribution advected by a smooth flow in a tube with arbitrary cross-section. We found explicit formulas which predict these statistics relying ultimately only on the cross-section of the tube, and see agreement with numerical simulation as well as experiment. Some partial derivatives and pretty pictures from simulations will be shown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the second part, I\u2019ll talk about my projects outside of partial differential equations. The main thrust of my (pre-pandemic)\u00a0postdoctoral\u00a0project was\u00a0applying\u00a0math and\u00a0machine learning\u00a0approaches\u00a0to identify biomarkers predictive of pre-symptomatic\u00a0infection in\u00a0\u201comics\u201d\u00a0data sets from human challenge\u00a0studies\u00a0of influenza-like illnesses.\u00a0I’ll define the jargon, and talk about our successes* in answering a few questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Given a\u00a0collection of blood samples from\u00a0study\u00a0participants, can one identify (classify) a\u00a0new\u00a0blood sample as coming from a \u201cshedder\u201d\u00a0(one who may be expected to be contagious)\u00a0in the first 24 hours after\u00a0exposure?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Given a\u00a0collection of\u00a0granular\u00a0blood samples from study participants\u00a0over the\u00a0first\u00a0week\u00a0of infection,\u00a0and given a blood sample\u00a0from someone already known to be\u00a0infected, can one predict\u00a0how long it has been since the exposure event?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
