Title:<\/strong> Projections on Banach spaces and a lifting property of operators<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong> In this talk I will present properties of contractive projections and explain their role in the existence of norm preserving lifts of operators. A pair of Banach spaces (X, J)<\/em><\/strong>, with J<\/em><\/strong> a closed subspace of X<\/strong><\/em>, has the quotient lifting property (QLP) iff for every space Y<\/strong><\/em> and S \u2208 L(Y, X\/J)<\/strong><\/em>, there is \u015c<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0\u2208 L(Y, X)<\/strong><\/em>such that S = \u03c0 \u25e6 \u015c<\/em><\/strong>, where \u03c0<\/em><\/strong> denotes the quotient map from X<\/strong><\/em> onto X\/J<\/strong><\/em>. This property was motivated by Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri lifting property for Banach spaces.<\/p>\n

A pair of Banach spaces (X,J)<\/em><\/strong> has the QLP iff J<\/strong><\/em> is the kernel of a contractive projection on X<\/strong><\/em>. Several illustrative examples will be discussed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Bio-Sketch<\/strong> for\u00a0Fernanda Botelho:<\/p>\n

I am a\u00a0<\/span>full professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis. I earned\u00a0<\/span>a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics\u00a0<\/span>from the University of California at Berkeley and I did my undergraduate studies at the Universidade do Porto, Portugal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My main research interest is in Operator Theory and Functional Analysis.\u00a0<\/span>I have authored and co-authored more than 80 research articles. I was a Donavant Professor in 2013-2016.\u00a0 <\/span>I have been\u00a0<\/span>the coordinator\u00a0<\/span>for the Mathematical Sciences Graduate Programs\u00a0<\/span>since 2015.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0<\/span>participated and organized several conferences, funded by the National Sciences Foundation and in collaboration with the Association for Women in Mathematics. I have served in\u00a0<\/span>programs geared to\u00a0<\/span>high school\u00a0<\/span>teachers\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the professional training\u00a0 <\/span>of graduate assistants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
