{"id":2550,"date":"2022-01-20T17:38:26","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T01:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/ccms\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=2550"},"modified":"2022-01-21T13:20:36","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T21:20:36","slug":"using-stitching-for-faster-sampling-prof-mark-huber","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/ccms\/event\/using-stitching-for-faster-sampling-prof-mark-huber\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Stitching for faster sampling (Prof. Mark Huber)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Title:<\/strong> Using Stitching for faster sampling<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker:<\/strong>\u00a0Mark Huber, Department of Mathematics, Claremont McKenna College<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Point processes\u00a0<\/em>are used to model location data, such as the locations of trees in a forest, or cities in a plain. \u00a0<em>Repulsive<\/em>\u00a0point processes modify the basic model in order to obtain points that are farther apart from each other than would be expected if they were placed uniformly at random.\u00a0 In order to understand the behavior of these models, <em>Monte Carlo methods<\/em>\u00a0are used, which draw samples from the probabilistic model.\u00a0 In this talk, I&#8217;ll show how to draw from a particular example of a repulsive point process called the <em>Strauss process\u00a0<\/em>for parameters that were never possible before.\u00a0 The method is called <em>stitching<\/em>, and is a type of divide-and-conquer algorithm that is surprisingly effective for these types of problems.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Huber got his start in data science (before it was called that) at HMC (&#8217;94).\u00a0 He then headed to Cornell and obtained his Ph.D. from the Operations Research and Industrial Engineering department.\u00a0 After a postdoc at Stanford and a position\u00a0at Duke, he returned to the West Coast and is now the Fletcher Jones Foundation Professor of Mathematics and Statistics and George R.
