Title<\/strong>:\u00a0Modeling\u00a0 <\/span>Zoonotic Infectious Diseases from Wildlife to Humans<\/p>\n

Speaker<\/strong>: Prof.\u00a0Linda J. S. Allen, P. W. Horn Distinguished Professor Emeritus Texas Tech University<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/strong>:\u00a0Zoonotic infectious diseases are diseases transmitted\u00a0from animals to humans. It is estimated that over 60% of human infectious diseases are zoonotic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified eight priority zoonoses in the US. Three of\u00a0<\/span>the priority zoonoses are\u00a0<\/span>avian influenza, Lyme disease, and emerging coronaviruses. Spillover of infections from animals to humans depends on a complex pathway from the\u00a0<\/span>natural wildlife reservoir.\u00a0 <\/span>The natural reservoir for\u00a0<\/span>avian influenza virus is wild birds but it is spread to humans from infected chickens.\u00a0The natural reservoir for the bacterial pathogen causing Lyme disease is mice but it is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick vector.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In this presentation, we\u00a0discuss a few of the modeling efforts to better understand\u00a0the spread of infection in\u00a0the natural reservoir and the spillover\u00a0<\/span>to humans\u00a0<\/span>as well as the impacts of demographic and\u00a0environmental variability\u00a0on\u00a0timing of spillover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Linda J. S. Allen received her PhD in\u00a0Mathematics\u00a0from University of\u00a0Tennessee and was a Professor\u00a0of Mathematics at Texas Tech University\u00a0until 2019. \u00a0She is currently\u00a0an Adjunct\u00a0\u00a0Graduate Faculty at Texas\u00a0Tech University.\u00a0Her research interests are in\u00a0mathematical\u00a0ecology, epidemiology, and immunology.<\/div>\n
