Abstract:<\/strong> Algebraic statistics is an interdisciplinary field that uses tools from computational algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics to address problems in statistics and its applications. A guiding principle in this field is that many statistical models of interest are semialgebraic sets\u2014a set of points defined by polynomial equalities and inequalities. Algebraic statistics is not only concerned with understanding the geometry and algebra of the underlying statistical model, but also with applying this knowledge to improve the analysis of statistical procedures, and to devise new methods for analyzing data.<\/div>\n

Algebraic statistics is a broad field actively expanding from discrete statistical models, contingency table analysis, and experimental design to Gaussian models, singular learning theory, and applications to phylogenetics, machine learning, and biochemical reaction networks. In this talk, I will introduce this field by discussing the foundational Diaconis-Sturmfels approach to contingency table analysis. This talk will be accessible to undergraduate students with some knowledge of linear algebra and basic statistics.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Luis David Garc\u00eda Puente is a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Colorado College. \u00a0He grew up in Mexico City and received his B.S. from Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico\u00a0and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, both in Mathematics. After postdoctoral appointments at the\u00a0Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and Texas A&M University, he joined Sam Houston State University.\u00a0

Luis is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society for contributions to applied algebraic geometry,\u00a0including algebraic statistics and geometric modeling, and for broadening participation\u00a0in the mathematical sciences. He is a member of the SIAM Activity Group on Algebraic Geometry,\u00a0the Latinxs and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences Community, and the\u00a0Society for Advancement of Chicanos\/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. In Summer 2023, he will be a PRiME Undergraduate Research Director.<\/div>\n
