{"id":2812,"date":"2022-08-30T16:26:26","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T23:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/ccms\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=2812"},"modified":"2022-09-12T12:05:11","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T19:05:11","slug":"continuity-versus-uniform-continuity-prof-gerald-beer","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/ccms\/event\/continuity-versus-uniform-continuity-prof-gerald-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"Continuity Versus Uniform Continuity (Prof. Gerald Beer)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Title:\u00a0<\/strong>Continuity Versus Uniform Continuity<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker:<\/strong> Gerald Beer, Department of Mathematics,\u00a0California State University<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>In this talk we discuss the class of metric spaces &#8211; called the UC-spaces &#8211; whose members have this characteristic property: \u00a0each continuous function<em> f<\/em> on <em>X<\/em> \u00a0must be uniformly continuous.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Gerald Beer, <em>PhD UCLA 1971<\/em> won the faculty prize for teaching assistants at UCLA.\u00a0 He was a full professor at California State University Los Angeles, where he won the Presidents Distinguished Professor Award. He has around 140 papers in refereed journals plus two books: (1) Applied Calculus for Business and Economics; (2) Topologies on Closed and Closed Convex Sets.\u00a0 He is on the editorial boards of <em>The Journal of Convex Analysis<\/em> and <em>Set-Valued and Variational Analysis<\/em>. In 1983-1984, he was a Fulbright Professor associated with the Mathematical Consortium of Manila, and in 1986, he was a National Academy of Sciences exchange scholar at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.\u00a0 He had visiting positions at the University of California, Davis, University of Minnesota, University of Milan, University of Salerno, University of Naples II, University of Limoges, University of Montpellier II, University of Perpignan, University of Complutense Madrid, Politecnica Valencia, UMH Elche, and Auckland Institute of Technology.
