YEAR-END REPORT 2020-2021

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS, 2019-2020

(OCAC Data Science Initiative 2019-2020 Report)

  • Facilitated tri-weekly meetings throughout the year with these two data science     committees, each composed of key faculty and staff stakeholders.
  • Finalized a proposal that identifies rationale, courses and student learning outcomes for a 7C DS curriculum.
  • Discussed at length the necessary components of student learning outcomes and how to develop faculty capacities to teach disciplinary content, interdisciplinary data science analytical tools and instruments, integrated ethics, and navigate tech needs.
  • Finalized a curricular mapping matrix which lists existing data science-related courses across all 7Cs that may be used to satisfy the 7C DS curriculum.
  • Shared these documents with deans and faculty on each campus to elicit feedback and input on both.
  • Secured interest at all campuses to explore implementation of a DS curricular program at each campus, which has already resulted in three new DS minors and a major on the brink of implementation on three campuses.

Emerging Data Science Curricula @ The Claremont Colleges

SCR DS minor has been approved, to launch Fall ‘20
CMC In addition to existing DS sequence, CMC has approved a new DS major, to launch Fall ‘20
PTZ DS fieldgroup B has been approved; DS minor proposal is under review, likely launch Fall ‘21
HMC 2 DS professors hired and Core curriculum revamped; DS curriculum talks aimed for Fall ‘20
POM Interested faculty are meeting over the summer to design a DS minor, to propose in Fall ‘20
KGI Interested faculty are meeting with existing campus centers to create cohesive data science     program that will draw on existing classes
CGU In addition to existing MA in Data Analytics, a new Transdisciplinary DS MA is being formulated
  • Explored what DS/IT infrastructure and advising support is needed and drafted a proposal for a DS Library hub to work collaboratively to respond to diverse needs across the campuses. Worked collectively to circulate proposal across multiple constituents to ensure it adequately described needs and articulated feasible solutions. Final proposal submitted to ADC, May, 2020.
  • Conducted research on DS at peer institutions; visited and built networks nationally with peer institutions and organizations dedicated to building DS programs (i.e., LACOL and Atlanta University Consortium).
  • Designed and hosted a one-day data science conference based on areas in which faculty reported wanting to grow their expertise (August, 2019, 100 participants).
  • Designed and hosted a 7C Data Science faculty panel on “Launching Data Science Majors and Minors” with guest speaker Anna Baragagliotti presentation (February, 2020, 70 participants).
  • Explored potential future collaboration with Habib University of American University of Beirut that would allow 7C students to take DS courses online that would both expand existing data science course offerings and also offer a unique and valuable intercultural exchange opportunity (perhaps focusing on interweaving a cultural context with DS focus, such as comparative geography, textual analysis).
  • Maintained the Claremont Data Science listserv, to which 173 addresses are currently subscribed.

 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS, 2018-2019

  • Convened 7C faculty and staff bi-weekly working group, plus three subcommittees focusing on curricular coherence, faculty development, and advancement/outreach
  • Drafted a Data Science proposal that identifies rationale, courses, and student learning outcomes for a 7C Data Science curriculum, along with a curricular mapping matrix
  • Deployed a 7C faculty/staff survey capturing wants and needs within the Claremont Data Science community
  • Programmed a 7C Data Science Faculty Development conference
  • Launched a dedicated webiste for Data Science at The Claremont Colleges:
