Do you as a faculty member feel prepared to handle these moments and interactions? How might we prepare ahead of time to be ready for such moments?<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the workshop will discuss various scenarios around difficult interactions and focus on creating safe and engaging classrooms. With the help of these studies, participants in this workshop will interrogate common educational phrases like \u201cweed-out classes,\u201d \u201cgrit,\u201d and \u201cstudents today can\u2019t &#8230;\u201d to determine what ways of thinking might lie behind them, and what the impact of such thinking might be.\u00a0 Participants will use this knowledge to begin to reformulate one assignment or lecture to better encourage student learning and success.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"avia_sortable_element avia_pop_class av_icon_box av_drag ui-draggable\" data-shortcodehandler=\"av_icon_box\" data-modal_title=\"Icon Box\" data-modal_ajax_hook=\"av_icon_box\" data-dragdrop-level=\"3\" data-allowed-shortcodes=\"av_icon_box\" data-preview=\"1\" data-closing_tag=\"yes\" data-modal_on_load=\"modal_load_tabs, modal_load_tiny_mce, modal_load_colorpicker\">\n<div class=\"avia_inner_shortcode avia-edit-element\">\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox avia_textblock avia_textblock_style\">\n<div class=\"avia-position-left \" data-update_class_with=\"position\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox_content_wrap\">\n<h4 class=\"avia_iconbox_title\" data-update_with=\"title\">Building Welcoming Departments<\/h4>\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox_content\" data-update_with=\"content\">\n<p>Is your department welcoming?\u00a0 Do students feel encouraged to major in your field? Do students know how to navigate your major?\u00a0 Does your department foster a community for students, faculty and staff?<\/p>\n<p>This workshop will discuss the importance and benefits of creating transparent, inclusive, and welcoming departments.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will be exposed to research describing the positive effects of building belonging in our departments.\u00a0 We will discuss examples of obstacles students face (hidden prerequisites, when courses are offered, microaggressions) and suggest remediation strategies.\u00a0 We will also discuss different easy to implement strategies for engaging and welcoming students at all levels (first years through declared majors).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"avia_sortable_element avia_pop_class av_icon_box av_drag ui-draggable\" data-shortcodehandler=\"av_icon_box\" data-modal_title=\"Icon Box\" data-modal_ajax_hook=\"av_icon_box\" data-dragdrop-level=\"3\" data-allowed-shortcodes=\"av_icon_box\" data-preview=\"1\" data-closing_tag=\"yes\" data-modal_on_load=\"modal_load_tabs, modal_load_tiny_mce, modal_load_colorpicker\">\n<div class=\"avia_inner_shortcode avia-edit-element\">\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox avia_textblock avia_textblock_style\">\n<div class=\"avia-position-left \" data-update_class_with=\"position\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox_content_wrap\">\n<h4 class=\"avia_iconbox_title\" data-update_with=\"title\">Teaching is Hard, Have Some Wine<\/h4>\n<div class=\"avia_iconbox_content\" data-update_with=\"content\">\n<p>The CTL invites all <strong>mid-career faculty<\/strong> to our first ever &#8220;Teaching is Hard, Have some Wine&#8221; reception. Your colleagues at the CTL will be on hand to answer questions and facilitate conversation about the unique challenges and opportunities of mid-career teaching. There will be a few minutes of review from the previous workshop with the bulk of the workshop focused on new material. A particular focus of the workshop will be on successfully facilitating challenging classroom discussions. However, effective teaching on line is more than just knowing how to use Zoom and Sakai. \u00a0If we want to give our students the best chance for success in a challenging situation, there are sound principles of on-line pedagogy that can help. The CTL is therefore offering the following workshop for faculty who are interested in preparing to move their classes to an on-line format.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>In this two hour workshop, participants will:<\/div>\n<div>1) learn key principles of on-line pedagogy, and in particular the ways on-line learning differs from face-to-face (f2f);<\/div>\n<div>2) practice the process of transitioning from f2f to online courses using examples from the 7Cs;<\/div>\n<div>3) workshop with facilitators to move some aspect of a current or future class to an online format;<\/div>\n<div>4) leave with a host of resources for further study and support.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This workshop will be offered twice:<\/div>\n<div><b>Friday, March 13 from noon &#8211;
