Students can use the listed resources. Each student is responsible for\u00a0preparing a resume, contacting potential internship opportunities, and arranging for\u00a0transportation and scheduling. We do not provide internships for students. Internships in\u00a0media, art, technology, journalism, music, or related industries are eligible for MS 196 credit\u00a0provided they are unpaid and for a minimum of 60 hours total.<\/p>\n<p>Submit a PERM for MS 196 and the Internship Proposal Form (Google Doc). Proposals are\u00a0submitted via the following web form. Your proposal should be submitted along with your\u00a0course PERM. PERMS are only approved once you have secured an eligible internship. MS 196\u00a0should be taken concurrently with your internship for internships in the Fall and Spring\u00a0semesters. For summer internships, MS 196 enrollment should occur in the next semester a\u00a0student is on campus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdb_-K6WmTJtF2nmpDqlhibYD9v7m8z-Hfkrp81c4MTIpyJfQ\/viewform?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internship Proposal Form<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>MS 196 Course Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>The purpose of this course is to integrate professional media studies experience with a\u00a0student&#8217;s intellectual and academic interests. The following requirements were developed to\u00a0create connections between practice outside the academy and the analytical and theoretical\u00a0concerns of the field.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t complete the listed requirements within the indicated time frames, you should not\u00a0assume that you will receive credit for this course. All internship materials are due by the last\u00a0day of classes during the semester in which the student is enrolled in PZ MS 196 to their\u00a0dropbox on Sakai.<\/p>\n<h3>Prepare a Resume and Sample Cover Letter<\/h3>\n<p>A great resource for helping you prepare your resume and cover letter is your college&#8217;s Career\u00a0Services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pitzer.edu\/offices\/career-services\">Pitzer College Career Services<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pomona.edu\/administration\/career-development\/\">Pomona College Career Development Office<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrippscollege.edu\/students\/career\/index.php\">Scripps Career Planning and Resources<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmc.edu\/soll-center\">Claremont McKenna College Career Services Center<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/career-services\/\">Harvey Mudd Career Services<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Keep a Log<\/h3>\n<p>For each day you work, record the total number of hours. You should work a minimum of 60\u00a0hours. Complete an entry in your log at least once a week. Some ideas for information to\u00a0include in your log:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did you accomplish this week?<\/li>\n<li>What specific tasks did you perform?<\/li>\n<li>Describe your work environment. What do you like best? What would you like to<br \/>\nchange?<\/li>\n<li>Describe your supervisor&#8217;s managerial &amp; communication style.<\/li>\n<li>What have you learned about the company you are working for? What else would you<br \/>\nlike to know?<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate your own job performance.<\/li>\n<li>Has your internship changed your impressions of your field or the industry as a whole?<\/li>\n<li>What new professional skills have you developed?<\/li>\n<li>What have you learned about yourself in terms of your interpersonal skills and how you\u00a0function in the workplace?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Read and Respond to Three Texts Related to Your Internship<\/h3>\n<p>In consultation with the internship professor, select three texts relevant to your internship\u00a0experience. These readings can be books, substantial articles, films or videos, but at least two of\u00a0them should be academically-oriented. Your responses should be approximately 2 pages long\u00a0and should go beyond synopsis to reflect your assessment of the texts&#8217; worth and relevance. A<br \/>\nlist of suggested reading materials is available here.<\/p>\n<h3>Submit a Final Project<\/h3>\n<p>Your final project should be designed in consultation with the professor. There are two basic\u00a0types: a) a compilation of work completed at the internship with explanatory comments (press\u00a0releases, script coverage, letters, audio-visual materials, etc.); b) a paper in which you conduct\u00a0an interview with one or more of the &#8220;principal&#8221; employees at your internship site and provide<br \/>\na thorough history of the company and its progression to its current state.<\/p>\n<h3>Meet with the Professor<\/h3>\n<p>You should plan to meet with them at least three times: to explain the internship and select\u00a0texts, to discuss any problems, and confirm final project topics.<\/p>\n<h3>Complete Internship Paperwork<\/h3>\n<p>Internship summary filled out by student.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1OhYUD8GDFzBCaw3tfgELI_n76CKc9qbZzckYtO0zen8\/viewform\">Internship Summary Form<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Employer verification form filled out by site supervisor.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1zR6CCEeXZYvoCwhBsAEGMAP1Tb30V3UZtraRgwuD2Rg\/viewform\">Employer Verification Form<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Requirements for MS 196 PZ: Media Internship Prior to Course Enrollment Find an internship.
