MMUF Library Coach Program

Background

The library was invited to participate in the MMUF initiative in 2015 after some groundwork-laying by the Dean of the Library, Kevin Mulroy. Based on a Librarian Mentor model developed at UCLA, Library Coaches build a research-focused relationship with students geared toward ongoing empowerment and the development of  research and information literacy skills needed to be successful as higher-ed faculty. Library Coaches will work with each assigned Fellow for two years as they develop research interests that will culminate in capstone projects.

About the Program and Role of Library Coaches

The MMUF Library Coach program aims to have Fellows view their Library Coach as a first resource for research and information needs across their coursework. To guide the Fellows toward an understanding of the importance of the library to a career in the academy, Library Coaches will build strong relationships that encourage Fellows to “Love their Library.” The expectations outlined below are designed to assist in the success in your student/coach relationship.

  • A four year commitment to coach 1-4 Fellows through their junior and senior year.
  • Complete the Library Coach Orientation (May of each year)
  • Participate in the MMUF summer research workshop (May of each year)
  • Participate in at least 1 workshop a semester tied to the MMUF seminar, potentially in the evening.
  • Initiate a minimum of 3 face to face meetings with each Fellow you are coaching per year (1 meeting in the initial summer and 1 per semester after that).
  • Check in with each of your Fellows via email at least 3 times per semester.
