SUMMARY:[POSTPONED] Pop-up Class: Ovidian Figures
DESCRIPTION:Join professors Jessica McCoy and Colleen Rosenfeld for their pop-up class. Ovid’s Metamorphoses begins with the poet’s intention: “To tell of bodies changed / To different forms.” How does one body\, one constellation of matter\, assume another shape? We will answer this by analyzing and creating\, describing and drawing.

SUMMARY:Design and the Environment: A conversation with Minsuk Cho
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Nina Ahn\n\n\n\nThe recent challenges confronted by Minsuk Cho and his practice Mass Studies arrive through the many external forces and urban ecologies at play – mainly that of culture and nature. Whether it be within the political\, environmental\, or social context of the city\, its history and future\, independent and symbiotic approaches and the crossing of stimuli become the impetus of the various architectural approaches for a series of projects currently in progress. The diverse ‘grounds’ being examined range in scale\, use\, and context. \n\n\n\nEnviroLab Asia will host a conversation and Q & A with Minsuk Cho about how he links together design and the environment. This event is free and open to the public! \n\n\n\nThis Q & A will be after Cho’s talk\, called Challenged Grounds\, at Claremont McKenna’s Athenaeum\, starting at 11:45 am. Check out the description and sign up for his talk and his bio here!

SUMMARY:Poetry is Not a Luxury: Creative Writing Workshop + Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is Not a Luxury: Creative Writing Workshop & Open Mic\nHosted by the Asian American Resource Center\, Creative Writing Workshops with 5C Wordsmiths\, and Kasama \nWednesday\, November 30\, 2016\n7PM-9:30PM\nThe Hive at the Claremont Colleges \n“Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change\, first made into language\, then into idea\, then into more tangible action. Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought.”\n–Audre Lorde \nPoetry has the power to create counter-narratives. We are holding this workshop as a critical space for building community and sharing experiences. We are inspired by the words of Audre Lorde\, and we also seek to inspire workshop participants. This event will follow the format of a writing workshop\, then group writing circles. The final part of the event will be an open mic where participants will deliver the poems they collectively created or any of their own works. No previous poetry-writing experience is required! \nThis event is open to all students of the Claremont Colleges\, and will especially center on the experiences of marginalized communities—including students of color\, indigenous students\, low-income\, first-gen students\, undocumented students\, queer and trans students\, students with disabilities\, Muslim students\, womxn-identifying students\, and students who identify as survivors. \nWORKSHOP FACILITATORS\n(short version)\nStephanie Sajor and Eddy M. Gana Jr.\, also known as Steady\, are spoken word artists and community organizers based in Los Angeles. They are community leaders and co-founders of an open mic series in Historic Filipinotown as well as an Asian American spoken word collective. They got their start organizing within arts and activism as student leaders during college. As organizers\, they believe that the arts serve as an important avenue for personal growth\, developing community activists\, and ultimately\, greater social change. \n(long version)\nStephanie Sajor and Eddy M.
