SUMMARY:Intro to 3D printing - Tuesdays at the Hive
DESCRIPTION:We’re super thrilled to have our first student-run mini-workshop. This week William Lamb (Pomona second year) will give us an introduction to 3D printing by showing us the basics of shape manipulation in Meshmixer. By the end of the workshop you’ll have made a 3D shape. After the workshop we’ll print your design for you. \nNO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. \nImportant Notes!\n1. We’ll have limited spots/equipment so if you can\, please bring your own laptop with Meshmixer downloaded. http://www.meshmixer.com/download.html\n2. If you bring your own laptop\, you’ll also need a mouse.\n3. It’s awesome to bring your own laptop because you’ll then be able to play with these tools at home.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Course - Reimagine the Digital Toolshed
DESCRIPTION:The Rick and Susan Sontag Center\, aka the Hive\, will be hosting its first pop-up class – “Reimagining the Digital Toolshed”. In the pop-up class\, student teams will work on a hands-on project with the Honnold-Mudd Library to reimagine how students will utilize a space dedicated to digital tools (anything ranging from GPS devices to media creation software. The Pop-up class will consist of 3 sessions: two 2-hour sessions and one 3-hour session. During the sessions\, student teams will undertake the challenge by delving into the design process with guidance from instructors and coaches.Students will use empathetic listening techniques to understand more about the needs of potential users\, develop a user-informed perspective on what the digital toolshed in order to meet user needs\, brainstorm concrete ways in which it can be realized. Then the ideas will be prototyped and tested with real users. At the end of the challenge\, these prototypes will be presented to the Library’s senior leaders. \nClick here to apply to the class. http://goo.gl/forms/0MOQ1ssqWs \nApplication Deadline: 11:59pm Wednesday\, October 21

SUMMARY:Fear Fest (BYOF - Bring Your Own Fear!)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Hive for Fear Fest\, an event where all the participants address one of their fears in a public supportive setting. \nHow does it work?\n1. Send brief description of the fear that you will be enacting (singing publicly\, snake handling\, being in an enclosed space\, monsters\, etc). The Hive team will need this to make sure that we can accommodate the requests in a safe and supportive manner.\nThe link to the Sign Up Sheet\nhttp://goo.gl/forms/1IPZE4UVRw \n2. Show up to the Hive at 7pm on Thursday 10/30. Due to the potentially vulnerable nature of these activities\, all attendees must also be sharing/exploring one of their fears. (no exceptions – The Hive team will be doing it too.)\n3. Explore your fear in a supportive environment. \nThe goal of fear fest is for all of us to gain more confidence in the face of our fears. SUMMARY:TONIGHT!!! P5 & ARDUINO WORKSHOPS
DESCRIPTION:Hack Week is a series of workshops on how to program\, designed for both students (and any interested parties) with little to no prior coding experience\, as well as those who have more experience. We will have teachers and mentors to help every step of the way so you will be ready to make something awesome at the 5C Hackathon! \nThe workshops will be held from 7-9PM* on November 9-12\, the week leading up to the 5C Hackathon on Friday\, November 13. \nFor those of you who have attended before\, we’re doing things a little differently this semester! Rather than beginner and advanced categories\, we’ll have topical workshops with clear prerequisites (ranging from little to no coding knowledge to those with experience in a programming language). As always\, our code will be made available on our GitHub page. \nWe hope to see you there! \n*Workshops will take place from 8-10PM on Thursday\, November 12th. See times below for more details. \nNote: All workshops will take place on Pomona’s campus. We also strongly encourage attendees to bring their own laptops (preferably charged). Times are subject to change\, but we’ll let you know if they do. \nArduino\n7-9PM in Millikan 0251 (Basement level of Millikan)\nCome learn more about the Arduino electronic prototyping platform in this interactive workshop! Arduinos are easy-to-learn and tons of fun\, letting you create everything from blinking lights to robots. You’ll have the opportunity to work in groups under the instruction of Professor Dwight Whitaker from the Physics Department at Pomona\, with no electronics or programming background required. \nPrerequisites: None. \nNote: This workshop can only host about 30 students so that group sizes are manageable. \nThinking about coming? What better way to try out your new skills than in the 5C Hackathon? Register at http://www.5chackathon.com/.

SUMMARY:Designing Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Feeling frustrated\, overwhelmed\, and/or angry when you think about your future? Cringe whenever someone asks you\, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” or “What are you going to do with THAT degree?” Don’t know how to do what you love? Well\, we can’t solve all your problems\, but we can give you the tools to approach those difficult questions in a way that is fun and empowering. \nIn this workshop\, we will apply some of the basic principles of design thinking\, such as brainstorming and prototyping\, to the “wicked problem” of figuring out what you’re going to do with your life. We hope to bust some myths about what this process is like\, introduce tools and frameworks that will help you understand yourself better\, develop a community of common ground and support\, and send you out the door knowing what to do next. Please join us! \n The workshop will include dinner in the middle. Group size is limited to 15 for this iteration of the workshop (there will be more opportunities in the spring\, though!). To RSVP\, please fill out our short form: http://goo.gl/forms/X5yWSBD9xU Priority will be given to seniors/juniors and those who sign up earlier. \nPlease send us any comments and questions. 🙂

DESCRIPTION:Finals and project work feeling overwhelming? Exhausted\, stressed out\, unable to focus? Join us for a low-key\, de-stressing moment of self care during our final mini-workshop of the semester. \nMost people take shallow ineffective breaths throughout the day and do not realize that the body needs effective airflow to properly function on physical\, emotional\, and mental levels.
