SUMMARY:I Have Nothing to Say and I am Saying It: A Performance
DESCRIPTION:Kay Larson (Pomona alumna\, documentary filmmaker\, and Cage scholar) leads participants in a two-hour interlude to create a performance from texts extracted from John Cage’s “Lecture on Nothing\,” 1952. To make this event we will use the instructions Cage gave his friends when he invited them to perform in the dining hall of Black Mountain College in 1952 — the debut of Theater Piece No. 1\, now universally called the first “happening.”

SUMMARY:Designing a Path to a Carbon-Free Campus
DESCRIPTION:If the path to becoming a carbon-neutral campus were easy\, we would have done it already. How can we stimulate creative and innovative solutions by knocking down barriers while making sure we’re still aimed towards the right end goal? \nTo celebrate Earth Day\, the Hive is partnering with Carrot\, an innovation cultivator\, to think about campus climate-neutrality pledges through the lens of incentivized challenges. In this workshop\, you will learn about current barriers\, tradeoffs\, and market failures standing in the way of colleges such as ours reaching their carbon goals. You will team with peers to design your own competitions that incentivize the outcomes you want. \nAll members of the Claremont Colleges community are welcome! Anne Eisele (Director of Project & Energy Management\, Pomona)\, Alexis Reyes (Assistant Director of Sustainability\, Pomona)\, and Dwight Whitaker (member of President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability\, Pomona) will be in the room to provide context about carbon at the 5C’s and answer questions about where we are so far. \n— \nWhat is the Hive?\nThe purpose of the Rick and Susan Sontag Center for Collaborative Creativity (The Hive) is to accelerate the creative development of students across the 5Cs. We do that through Exploration – by creating a safe space to experiment and play\, Collaboration – by bringing people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives together to be in the “intellectual muck” together\, and through Experiential Learning – thinking by doing. \nWhat is Carrot?\nCarrot inspires young innovators through engaging challenges that ask participants to use science\, technology\, engineering\, arts and mathematics to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. Carrot believes in the power of competition to stimulate learning\, creativity\, and innovation. Their programs reward dynamic thinking\, perseverance\, cooperation\, and ingenuity.

SUMMARY:Knit With Your Arms - Mini-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for an awesome DIY to do in 30-40 minutes that can actually make for a decent gift\, you should stop by to learn how to knit with your arms! \nThe Hive and Wellness Peers are coming together to teach you how to knit a scarf using your arms alone (well\, and some yarn….) It’ll take about two hours to learn\, but once you get the hang of it you can make scarfs in under 30-40 minutes! \nEveryone is welcome to join the session! \nWe will provide yarn for the first 12 people to show up! \nPLEASE: do not be late. Once you start knitting with your hands you can’t take it off\, and it will be difficult to help late arrivals catch up. \n**If yarn is easily affordable for you we prefer that you bring your own yarn instead of counting on our yarn. \nYou will need 2 skeins (at least 80 yards each) of chunkybulkythick yarn (or 4 skeins of 40 yd). They should be the same color unless you want to try out a funky color combo 🙂 \n— \nYou can get yarn at Michaels\, or alternatively\, order it online.\n(It’d be smart to partner up with others if you’re ordering online\, to reduce shipping costs + environmental impact) \nHere are some potential sites to order your yarn: \nhttp://www.craftsy.com/supplies/lion-brand-hometown-usa-yarn-singles/3040?r_src=ALGO31&p_src=SITE_UBER&d_src=PFS_SELL&rceId=1456866347151%7E4ept8bfu&_ct=ikwwe-lyum-iycybqh&_ctp=PFS_SELL%2C16547%2C3040 ($3.71 per skein)\nhttp://www.loveknitting.com/us/lion-brand-hometown-usa ($4.95 per skein)\nhttp://www.craftsy.com/supplies/bernat-softee-chunky-yarn/16547ext=PLA_Yarn&set_currency=US&adwd_id=c&adwadgr_id=9220300057&adwtarget_id=pla-85954781857&adwmtch_id&adwad_id=45800927857&gclid=CjwKEAiAmNW2BRDL4KqS3vmqgUESJABiiwDTb1C1_8laUwImA56Ls74OIsB3_jZJ-0epf6BP2VYRExoCupfw_wcB ($2.15 per skein – yarn not as thick as other two options)

SUMMARY:Poetry is Not a Luxury: Creative Writing Workshop + Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is Not a Luxury: Creative Writing Workshop & Open Mic\nHosted by the Asian American Resource Center\, Creative Writing Workshops with 5C Wordsmiths\, and Kasama \nWednesday\, November 30\, 2016\n7PM-9:30PM\nThe Hive at the Claremont Colleges \n“Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change\, first made into language\, then into idea\, then into more tangible action. Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought.”\n–Audre Lorde \nPoetry has the power to create counter-narratives. We are holding this workshop as a critical space for building community and sharing experiences. We are inspired by the words of Audre Lorde\, and we also seek to inspire workshop participants. This event will follow the format of a writing workshop\, then group writing circles. The final part of the event will be an open mic where participants will deliver the poems they collectively created or any of their own works. No previous poetry-writing experience is required! \nThis event is open to all students of the Claremont Colleges\, and will especially center on the experiences of marginalized communities—including students of color\, indigenous students\, low-income\, first-gen students\, undocumented students\, queer and trans students\, students with disabilities\, Muslim students\, womxn-identifying students\, and students who identify as survivors. \nWORKSHOP FACILITATORS\n(short version)\nStephanie Sajor and Eddy M. Gana Jr.\, also known as Steady\, are spoken word artists and community organizers based in Los Angeles. They are community leaders and co-founders of an open mic series in Historic Filipinotown as well as an Asian American spoken word collective. They got their start organizing within arts and activism as student leaders during college. As organizers\, they believe that the arts serve as an important avenue for personal growth\, developing community activists\, and ultimately\, greater social change. \n(long version)\nStephanie Sajor and Eddy M.
