SUMMARY:Creating Great Choices with Roger Martin
DESCRIPTION:What is integrative thinking? \nRoger Martin will be at the Hive to answer that question\, lead an intriguing discussion\, and sign copies of his latest book\, Creating Great Choices. \nProfessor Roger Martin is a writer\, strategy advisor\, and the former Dean and current Institute Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the Rotman School of Management\, University of Toronto. He is one of the foremost experts at integrating Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design into business. \nConventional wisdom―and business school curricula―teaches us that making trade-offs is inevitable when it comes to hard choices. But sometimes\, accepting the obvious trade-off isn’t good enough; the choices in front of us don’t get us what we need. In those cases\, rather than choosing the least worst option\, we can use the models in front of us to create a new and better answer. This is integrative thinking. \nFirst introduced by Roger Martin in The Opposable Mind\, integrative thinking is an approach to problem-solving that uses opposing ideas as the basis for innovation. Integrative thinking has been embraced by a wide audience\, from music mogul Jay-Z to Vanguard Group founder Jack Bogle―all seeking a replicable\, thoughtful approach to creating a “third and better way” to make important choices in the face of unacceptable trade-offs. \n———-\nACCESSIBILITY\nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). The west entrance can open automatically. For accommodations\, please contact the Hive via Facebook message\, email (hive@claremont.edu)\, or phone call (909-607-9248).

SUMMARY:Forgotten Histories of Singing at Work
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard of the songs known as “sea chanties\,” but did you know that these historical songs were intended for and only sung by sailors while working? Despite what you might see presented in movies or read in fiction\, chanties were not sung by pirates\, nor were they sung in the Navy. Their lyrics are rarely about “the sea\,” and they aren’t even very old. So what were chanties? Where did they come from\, and when and by whom were they sung? Moreover\, what did they sound like and how did they actually function? Why are they sung by sailors no more? \nIn the Spring 2017 course\, “American Maritime Musical Worlds” (PO MUS 74)\, students have explored these questions to gain insight into America’s lesser-known musical histories and maritime culture. Yet\, some questions cannot be answered solely through text-based research. To acquire experience-based understanding\, a group of Claremont students and faculty recently set sail aboard a traditional-style ship in the Port of Los Angeles\, where they tested the efficacy of the forgotten chanties in a saltier\, practical context. \nIn this Hive workshop\, project collaborators will share insights from their experience\, while inviting guests to participate in the composition of chanties and simulating the technique of singing at work.

SUMMARY:Exploring Creativity within Collaboration (Mini-Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO THE WEATHER\, THIS EVENT (https://www.facebook.com/events/395965124091536/) HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO THIS COMING FRIDAY. COME BY! \nStudents usually face the task of working on projects\, papers\, and general assignments in teams. But how students work with one another is just as important. \nSometimes\, we may not know what is too much or too little work. Others may not fill a comfortable stance among a balanced group project. Whether one has had past or current experience in a team\, from a sport to theatrical production to general group coursework\, this workshop will uncover some of the best traits of good teamwork-through creative expression. \nWe will start with a series of group activities\, observe ourselves and then reflect. Finally\, we will uncover the effective traits attained within the exercises to discover each user’s high potential to practice in their own everyday group activities. \nThis mini-workshop is led by Pitzer student\, Jordan Wong. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). SUMMARY:Edge of Town - Workshop #1
DESCRIPTION:Hello! EoT is a new 5C design magazine to be published this semester. This event will be our second meeting! If you couldn’t make the first\, come by a half hour before the event (4:30pm) and we’ll update you. \nEVENT DESCRIPTION\nThis workshop is meant to help those interested in contributing essays or other forms of written content to Edge of Town. Artists/graphic designers are also invited – see note below. \nOur objective on Friday will be to work out the organization of your piece (not to brainstorm). We will divide into small groups and start drafting out outlines. This will also be an opportunity for people with similar ideas to meet each other and potentially plan to co-write a piece. \nPlease come with your ideas mapped out and ideally with some light research to support your article. Stop by anyway if you don’t end up having time to do this! \nWe are also asking artists\, graphic designers\, and photographers to attend for two reasons: 1. If you plan on contributing a standalone art piece\, this could be an opportunity for you to work through your ideas with others. 2. We will need creative content to reflect the text\, so it will be important for you to be interacting with writers regularly. \nMake sure to keep up to date with us!\nfb.me/edgeoftown.claremont \nQuestions/comments:\ndchua9573@scrippscollege.edu
