SUMMARY:Exploring Creativity within Collaboration (Mini-Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Students usually face the task of working on projects\, papers\, and general assignments in teams. But how students work with one another is just as important. \nSometimes\, we may not know what is too much or too little work. Others may not fill a comfortable stance among a balanced group project. Whether one has had past or current experience in a team\, from a sport to theatrical production to general group coursework\, this workshop will uncover some of the best traits of good teamwork-through creative expression. \nWe will start with a series of group activities\, observe ourselves and then reflect. Finally\, we will uncover the effective traits attained within the exercises to discover each user’s high potential to practice in their own everyday group activities. \nThis mini-workshop is led by Pitzer student\, Jordan Wong. \nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). For accommodations\, please contact the Hive via Facebook message\, email (hive@claremont.edu)\, or phone call (909-607-9248).

We will be projecting the video above as well as talking about how this space was altered. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). The west entrance can open automatically. For accommodations\, please contact the Hive via Facebook message\, email (hive@claremont.edu)\, or phone call (909-607-9248).

SUMMARY:Slow Looking - Mini-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hive and the Pomona College Museum of Art for a session of slow\, sustained attention to original works of art from the Museum’s collection\, which will be on temporary display at the Hive during the workshop. While the average museum attendee examines an artwork for only 5-6 seconds\, studies have shown that an extended session of art observation and subsequent group conversation can increase each viewer’s empathy and overall awareness. This workshop will use slow looking techniques developed for training medical students\, and we will also use the time to think about how to improve and advance the art observation process.

SUMMARY:Tutoring for a Class You've Never Taken: STEM Edition
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever tutored for a science or math class? Have you ever helped your friends with their STEM homework? What strategies did you use to ensure that students understood the material\, and learned the skills to help them solve similar problems in the future? After three years tutoring math and computer science at Harvey Mudd\, Jennifer Rogers (HMC ’16) believes that we should feel equally comfortable tutoring classes we’ve taken\, and ones we haven’t. In this workshop\, participants will engage in mock tutoring to understand what is and is not effective for student learning. Additionally\, participants will discuss their own experiences with tutoring\, and we will distill some wisdom from these experiences. \nphoto credit: Harold Washington College (http://www.ccc.edu/colleges/washington/departments/Pages/Tutoring.aspx)

SUMMARY:Lovin' the Loop Pedal - Mini-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! It’s not everyday that someone puts a box in front of you and tells you it will only work if you stomp on it. It’s an infinitely more peculiar day when someone tells you that the result of stomping on a box\, with a few steps in between\, is the creation of beautiful music. Fortunately\, that day is coming soon and that box is called a loop pedal. \nBuzz on down to the Hive this Monday for a workshop that’s all about the importance of practicing musical collaboration and the potential to do it through musical devices like loop pedals. You don’t need an ounce of musical training to participate — all you need is a little bravery\, open ears\, and a willingness to make a lot of music and a lot of mistakes. \nCheck out this interview we did with Sajo after last semester’s version of this workshop if you want to learn more about how awesome it will be: http://creativity.claremont.edu/faces-hive-sajo-jefferson-po-19/ \nIMPORTANT: we have to cap attendance at 25 for this workshop\, so please RSVP directly to DChua9573@scrippscollege.edu to secure a spot! Alas\, we can’t take everyone who clicks “Yes” here.

DESCRIPTION:Did you ever have an idea for a startup\, but never quite knew what steps you needed to take to turn your idea into a reality? Join Pomona Ventures in collaboration with the Hive this Thursday to learn the ins and outs of doing market research\, testing your idea with little resources\, and asking the most salient questions every time you have a cool new idea. Please come with an idea already in mind and be ready to explore it. Bring some friends who would be interested in building up the idea with you AND A COMPUTER to do research.
