SUMMARY:Speech Acts: Writing to be Heard\, Speaking to be Read
DESCRIPTION:All we say to America is be true to what you said on paper.\n — Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop…” \nIf you say\, I quit or I sentence you or I refuse\, you have acted. These are speech acts: speech that\, as it is uttered\, acts on and in the world. Powerful speech\, but also everyday speech. Political speech\, but also speech in your home\, your classroom\, your dorm room. I assert. I promise. I do. \nIt’s more complicated than that. Speech acts in complicated ways—so does writing. And they act on each other. This is a four-session pop-up class about speech acts: powerful\, public speech\, everyday speech\, and the way we use written and spoken and visual language—on paper and out loud—to act on each other and on the world. \nKara Wittman\, Carolyn Ratteray\, Kareem Collie \nRegistration Required:\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/LqOsIr5iC2S4ICtM2

SUMMARY:The Interview - Empathetic Listening and Recording
DESCRIPTION:Everyone and their mother has a podcast these days. Maybe you’ve even thought of making your own. Come try for yourself in a low-stakes\, collaborative environment! \nIn the first workshop of three\, we will provide technical recording knowledge\, while exploring the power of listening and being listened to. We will learn how to use microphones and practice recording interviews! \n~~~ \nJoin us for a series of three workshops exploring the podcast creation process and the technical and interpersonal skills it requires. Each workshop will introduce technical skills (using a mic\, storyboarding\, audio software) and their respective real-world corollary (empathetic listening\, narrative storytelling\, clear communication). These workshops will give you the tools necessary to understand\, create\, and share the stories around you. \nAll workshops build towards one final product — a collaborative podcast created by all participants. But you should feel free to come to as many as you like. \nWorkshop #1: The Interview – Empathetic Listening and Recording Confidence\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/351241928693275/ \nWorkshop #2: Storyboarding – Creating Compelling Narratives\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1855143271173562/ \nWorkshop #3: Audio Editing – Make it Sound Good\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1154271541380505/ \nThese workshops are a collaboration between The Hive and Disco. https://www.discursive.co
