SUMMARY:Designing for a Regenerative Civilization
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 7C Resolana Series\, this session shares an overview of Cultural Creativity and explores the question “What does building a regenerative ecological society look like?” Through making\, team collaboration\, learning prompts\, and employing different tools at the Hive\, we’ll explore how a movement of makers can contribute toward a socially just\, wise\, and regenerative world. Topics are facilitated through a transdisciplinary and community-based learning approach. The 7C Resolana Series\, sponsored by the Chicano Latino Student Affairs (CLSA) and the Hive\, explores ecological thought\, design\, and practice. \nJoe Garcia (he\, him) is an Adjunct Professor of Community Based Learning at the University of New Mexico\, and is the Coordinator of the NSF STEM Scholars program at its School of Engineering.  After living in California and receiving his MA in Culture\, Ecology and Sustainable Communities at the New College of California\, Joe moved to New Mexico to connect with the land of his ancestors\, and to learn from plants and the Earth how to be human on the Earth. A self-identified Chicano\, he most cherishes the ancestral knowledge\, wisdom\, and lived experience that have allowed him to learn\, know\, and do. He is currently pursuing an MA in Transdisciplinary Analysis at CGU and leads the Resolana Series\, a learn-by-doing community space that brings together Ecological Thought\, Design and Practice. \nRSVP Required — Click here to register!

SUMMARY:UX Career Panel
DESCRIPTION:User Experience is a growing field\, rapidly changing with the development of new technology. In this panel discussion\, you’ll hear from Claremont alumna Peri Cuppens\, Leona Das\, and Jordan Hunt\, who have built their careers in the UX field. Learn about what they love\, what they fear\, and their advice for current students interested in UX careers. \n  \nPeri Cuppens — Pitzer College ’19 \n \nAfter graduating from Pitzer College in 2019 with a degree in Organizational Studies and 4-years of Pomona-Pitzer soccer under her belt\, Peri Cuppens’ journey with Human-Centered Design at the Hive began! While working with the amazing people at the Hive as a Post-Baccalaureate Associate\, Peri supported building out “Designing Your Team”\, a collaborative team-building program created with design thinking principles. After Peri’s amazing ~1 year with the Hive\, she travelled to Edinburgh\, Scotland to complete a master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. While at the University of Edinburgh Business School\, Peri was able to take part in a Human-Centered Design course and do an internship with a 3D imaging medical product design company. These experiences made clear to Peri that innovation\, design\, and healthcare were major areas of interest for a career trajectory. With this in mind\, once Peri returned to the US after graduating with her master’s\, she moved to San Francisco to begin working for Kaiser Permanente (Northern California Region)\, first in the Regional Portfolio Management Office and most recently as an Experience Designer for NCAL Consumer Experience. Peri uses HCD in her day to day work as her projects range from designing and implementing solutions for vaccination access\, holding focus groups and interviews to better understand the needs of our members and patients\, and testing the use of predictive Machine Learning algorithms to drive action and improve member and patient experience. \n  \nLeona Das — Scripps College ’23 \n \nLeona is a recent graduate of Scripps College\, where she majored in Environmental Analysis with a minor in Human-Centered Design. During her time at the 5Cs\, she worked at the Hive\, helping to consolidate and publish the Hive’s curricular offerings. Leona began her design journey during a gap year\, serving as the sole designer for a small web consulting startup. Now\, as a product designer on the Growth team at Slack\, she focuses on crafting data-driven user experiences that enhance engagement and drive adoption. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJordan Hunt — Pomona College ’22 \n \nHi there\, I’m Jordan (PO ‘22)! While at Pomona\, I studied Sociology and Africana Studies with an emphasis on research. Alongside my coursework\, I was also a Mellon Mays Research Fellow which was pivotal in discovering my love for research and serving diverse communities. I’m currently working at Hungryroot as their UX Researcher but previously interned as a researcher Affirm as well. Excited to chat about my experience in the industry so far! \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRSVP Required — Click here to register!
