SUMMARY:Audio Editing - Make it Sound Good
DESCRIPTION:Everyone and their mother has a podcast these days. Maybe you’ve even thought of making your own. Come try for yourself in a low-stakes\, collaborative environment! \nIn the last of the three workshops\, we will learn the skills needed to craft crisp\, professional sound\, turning our initial prototype into a captivating podcast you’d be proud to have your name on. \n~~~ \nJoin us for a series of three workshops exploring the podcast creation process and the technical and interpersonal skills it requires. Each workshop will introduce technical skills (using a mic\, storyboarding\, audio software) and their respective real-world corollary (empathetic listening\, narrative storytelling\, clear communication). These workshops will give you the tools necessary to understand\, create\, and share the stories around you. \nAll workshops build towards one final product — a collaborative podcast created by all participants. But you should feel free to come to as many as you like. \nWorkshop #1: The Interview – Empathetic Listening and Recording Confidence\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/351241928693275/ \nWorkshop #2: Storyboarding – Creating Compelling Narratives\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1855143271173562/ \nWorkshop #3: Audio Editing – Make it Sound Good\nEvent link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1154271541380505/ \nThese workshops are a collaboration between The Hive and Disco. https://www.discursive.co

SUMMARY:The Essay as Resistance Pop-Up Class
DESCRIPTION:SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION REQUIRED:\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/9Q7crlrBxvz81rki2 \nSession 1: March 3rd\, 7 – 8:30pm @ Studio 1 at the Hive\nSession 2: March 8th\, 7 – 8:30pm @ Studio 1 at the Hive\nSession 3: After Spring Break (TBD) @ the Digital Toolshed at Honnold/Mudd Library \nThis is an experiment in video essay making\, flash-filmmaking\, and the politics inherent in forms of representation. In this pop-up class we will think about\, and participate in\, the political nature of and possibilities inherent in the written essay and the video essay. In short: we will read essays and make short videos that participate in a political moment not (or not only) because they are thematically about political positions or views\, but because the historical form of the essay—digressive\, fragmentary\, unconventional—has a political force. If we are conditioned by our education to think of the essay as academic\, five-paragraph\, caught up in the conventions and privileges of the academy and belles lettres\, this course explores a different way of thinking\, writing\, making an essay on film. Consider German Arciniegas: “The essay is a passage along the edge of an abyss.” Or Philip Lopate on James Baldwin: “In Baldwin’s hands\, the essay lost its stigma of benign\, belletristic coziness and became a matter of life and death.” In this pop-up class you will reimagine\, and remake\, the essay as something that can be protest\, resistance\, power. \nRegistrants are expected to attend all three sessions.\nFood and snacks will be served. \nTeaching Team:\nProfessor Joanne Nucho\, Mellon Chau Postdoctoral Fellow in Anthropology at Pomona College\nProfessor Kara Wittman\, Director of College Writing and Assistant Professor of English at Pomona College \nQuestions?\ntimothy.moore@hive.claremont.edu \n———- \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). SUMMARY:Bold Exchanges: Post-College Questions and Cinnamon Rolls
DESCRIPTION:A teacher once said these were the BEST years of my life and the only thing I could think was “hahaha F*ck.” This the event for people that intensely want that statement to not be true but also want to ENJOY the F out of college. We got you. With all the stuff we are supposed to learn in class\, there’s a bunch of PRACTICAL questions about college and life after college that NEVER get asked or answered. \nExamples\nWhat do I do if I don’t think I can finish the semester\nDid I waste my time with my major or can I legit make money and do something that doesn’t make me hate myself\nHow can I find jobs in and out of the U.S. without documentation \nThis is Bold Exchanges’ Interactive workshop where you can ANONYMOUSLY ask and answer all your questions about (post)-college. If all of that doesn’t appeal to you\, there will be CINNAMON ROLLS and ICE CREAM as well as some COMEDY vids played – think Chris Rock not Amy Schumer lol. \nOpen to everyone – government approved or not. This might just be the most FUN\, UNIQUE\, and USEFUL event you’ve ever been to at Claremont – or at least a way to f up your diet. \nIf you are wondering will this event be like every other Claremont event – it wont. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe Hive is accessible through the entrance facing 7th Street (north entrance)\, the entrance facing College Ave (west entrance)\, and the entrance adjacent to Millikan Laboratory and the Cowart ITS building (east entrance). The west entrance can open automatically. For accommodations\, please contact the Hive via Facebook message\, email (hive@claremont.edu)\, or phone call (909-607-9248).

SUMMARY:Storyboarding - Creating Compelling Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Everyone and their mother has a podcast these days. Maybe you’ve even thought of making your own. Come try for yourself in a low-stakes\, collaborative environment! \nIn the second of three workshops\, we will collaboratively create a podcast “prototype” and delve into different forms of communicating and storytelling. We will listen to the interviews recorded in the first workshop and collaboratively engage with the process of creating a cohesive narrative from them.
