SUMMARY:TONIGHT!!! P5 & ARDUINO WORKSHOPS
DESCRIPTION:Hack Week is a series of workshops on how to program\, designed for both students (and any interested parties) with little to no prior coding experience\, as well as those who have more experience. We will have teachers and mentors to help every step of the way so you will be ready to make something awesome at the 5C Hackathon! \nThe workshops will be held from 7-9PM* on November 9-12\, the week leading up to the 5C Hackathon on Friday\, November 13. \nFor those of you who have attended before\, we’re doing things a little differently this semester! Rather than beginner and advanced categories\, we’ll have topical workshops with clear prerequisites (ranging from little to no coding knowledge to those with experience in a programming language). As always\, our code will be made available on our GitHub page. \nWe hope to see you there! \n*Workshops will take place from 8-10PM on Thursday\, November 12th. See times below for more details. \nNote: All workshops will take place on Pomona’s campus. We also strongly encourage attendees to bring their own laptops (preferably charged). Times are subject to change\, but we’ll let you know if they do. \nArduino\n7-9PM in Millikan 0251 (Basement level of Millikan)\nCome learn more about the Arduino electronic prototyping platform in this interactive workshop! Arduinos are easy-to-learn and tons of fun\, letting you create everything from blinking lights to robots. You’ll have the opportunity to work in groups under the instruction of Professor Dwight Whitaker from the Physics Department at Pomona\, with no electronics or programming background required. \nPrerequisites: None. \nNote: This workshop can only host about 30 students so that group sizes are manageable. \nThinking about coming? What better way to try out your new skills than in the 5C Hackathon? Register at http://www.5chackathon.com/.

SUMMARY:Working through your Independent Study
DESCRIPTION:Are you currently taking an independent study?\nYou’re not? Pass this on to someone who is!\nYou are? Then could you use a space to talk through your process\, work through the big questions you’re grappling with\, and/or process what you have done already? \nThe Hive is in the process of creating a structure to support students in their independent study goals\, and in this event we hope to provide the space for you to talk about where you are at in the process with fellow independent study students as well as allow us to get an understanding of how we can best support students in the future. The hope is that through this conversation\, you will gain better clarity around your project\, and we will be able to take your experience into account when we are creating our supportive structure. \nWe will have:\n•	A space for you to communicate what you are working on\n•	Questions that will facilitate you figuring your stuff out\n•	The opportunity to shape future Independent Study courses including your own\n•	Snacks and any leftover Halloween candy we can find! \nSee you at the Hive this Monday\, at 8PM!

SUMMARY:Warm up like a Design Thinker!
DESCRIPTION:Design is essential in fabricating the definition in what makes up the reality of today. But emphasizing the importance of collaboration with creativity is essential in further defining the wheel of inventing and improving our societal issues and challenges ahead. \nIn a world where interdisciplinary knowledge is essential in building the best projects and services to assist everyday tasks\, this workshop will take the stance of how industry influences in design thinking and human-centered design have utilized team warm-ups to design much more empathetic experiences. \nThe Hive offers students at the Claremont Colleges an array of creative design tools for ideation and experimentation. From The Hive’s Human-Centered Design class or Intro to Design Thinking workshops\, to IDEO and Stanford d.school methodologies in creating creative human impact\, this workshop wraps together elements of collaborative design from the Claremont Colleges to industry practice. \nParticipants will learn how to further develop working more effectively in teams\, unlocking or refreshing their creative talents\, as well as learning more about the collaborative design process. Human-centered design and design thinking are applicable even beyond the creative and collaborative design processes and are important tool-kits for students to have in their personal. professional\, and academic lives. \nThis workshop is led by Jordan Wong (PZ’19)\, a student at Pitzer College. \n

SUMMARY:36 Questions to Make Friends With Anyone (Mini-Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard of the 36 Questions (that presumably can make you make friends / fall in love with anyone)? \nThese questions only take about 45 minutes to discuss—and they almost always make two people feel better about each other and want to see each other again\, according to social psychology researcher Arthur Aron of the Interpersonal Relationships Lab at Stony Brook University in New York\, who published his results in “The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness” in Personality and Social Psychology. \nCome try it at the Hive on Thursday\, September 1st! We hope you’ll come away with a deep connection or a new friend. \nThis workshop will be led by close relationships researcher Professor Deb Mashek from HMC.
