{"id":5206,"date":"2025-07-14T11:59:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T18:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/thehive\/?p=5206"},"modified":"2025-08-11T12:44:41","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T19:44:41","slug":"intro-to-hcd-intergenerational-design-with-thinkertools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/thehive\/intro-to-hcd-intergenerational-design-with-thinkertools\/","title":{"rendered":"Intro to HCD: Intergenerational Design with Thinkertools + the Napier Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-end=\"641\" data-start=\"212\">Through a unique partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.napierinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-end=\"409\" data-start=\"371\">Napier Initiative at Pilgrim Place<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0students in Introduction to Human-Centered Design (HCD<em data-end=\"282\" data-start=\"237\">)<\/em>\u00a0got a crash course in collaboration with elders from the Claremont community, who joined the classroom not just as learners, but as co-designers!<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1178\" data-start=\"643\">Each elder was introduced to a student design team during\u00a0the semester and contributed\u00a0their lived experience, creativity, and insight to help develop innovative and\u00a0intergenerational STEM\/STEAM learning tools. Their objective was to\u00a0co-create engaging educational materials for under-resourced primary schools, in collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thinkertools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-end=\"997\" data-start=\"981\">Thinkertools<\/strong><\/a>, a nonprofit founded by Linda and Todd Shimoda. Thinkertools focuses on delivering hands-on science education where it\u2019s needed most, often in schools without access to robust STEM resources.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1487\" data-start=\"1180\">In collaboration with the elders, student teams dove into the HCD process: conducting empathy-based research with elementary-age learners, ideating fun and accessible STEAM experiences, prototyping their ideas, and refining them through feedback, all while teaching\u00a0their elder teammates about HCD\u00a0and integrating them into the process.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1638\" data-start=\"1489\">Their efforts\u00a0culminated in a showcase of inventive prototypes that brought science to life through intergenerational creativity. Highlights from the final deliverables included a science-through-cooking lesson<strong data-end=\"1678\" data-start=\"1644\">,\u00a0<\/strong><span data-end=\"1678\" data-start=\"1644\">a STEAM volcano workshop, a StoryCorps-style recording project capturing cross-generational stories, an egg incubation lesson hosted at Pitzer&#8217;s farm, and a multilingual family zine and role-play kit to\u00a0<\/span>foster engagement at home and\u00a0in the classroom, among others.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2283\" data-start=\"2016\">For their final presentations, elders joined their teams in storytelling, design defense, and even role-play. The project&#8217;s results were not just creative deliverables, but rich relationships and fresh perspectives on both sides of the generational aisle.
