{"id":947,"date":"2018-04-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/thehive\/march-hive-highlight-unflattening-weaving-the-literal-through-the-abstract\/"},"modified":"2020-04-08T23:04:14","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T23:04:14","slug":"march-hive-highlight-unflattening-weaving-the-literal-through-the-abstract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colleges.claremont.edu\/thehive\/march-hive-highlight-unflattening-weaving-the-literal-through-the-abstract\/","title":{"rendered":"March Hive Highlight: Unflattening: Weaving The Literal Through The Abstract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 8th, the Hive presented the workshop, \u201cUnflattening: Weaving The Literal Through The Abstract.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workshop offered participants a way to see visual communication \u2013 or art and design, especially the practice of making comics and sequential art \u2013 as an alternative medium to critical studies, research, and storytelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Sousanis, author and cartoonist of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unflattening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a graphic novel and experiment in visual thinking, partnered with the Hive and Claremont Graduate University\u2019s Transdisciplinary Department to guide participants through a series of exercises deconstructing the process of visual storytelling, the usages of analogy and visual metaphor, as well as formal techniques and tips in the design of sequential art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants left with new tools for tackling visual thinking and storytelling, and alternative ways to engage their collegiate work, as well as their work beyond. Most importantly, everyone enjoyed the experience.
