Our News Letter Gallery

Welcome to the Justice Education Center’s newsletter gallery — your visual journey into a powerful model of Inside‑Out higher education at Pitzer College. Since its inception in 2018 as the Justice Education Initiative, this groundbreaking program has expanded to encompass a full bachelor’s degree pathway offered within prison settings. Each image you see showcases moments where incarcerated “inside” students and Claremont College “outside” students come together, united by curiosity, academic rigor, and mutual respect. Our photos include classroom discussions, guest lectures, and celebration ceremonies — all part of a curriculum that challenges the traditional walls of higher education.

???? Inside‑Out Classroom Moments

Many images feature mixed‑identity classrooms—lectures, artwork, and student‑led discussions. This Inside‑Out model, pioneered between Pitzer College and the California Rehabilitation Center (CRC), began in 2014 and scaled into the U.S.’s first Inside‑Out BA pathway in December 2020. On‑campus faculty and visiting community leaders teach alongside incarcerated peers—overcoming barriers and humanizing the justice system. Captions like “students engaging in classroom discussion” reflect this real, lived academic exchange.

???? Celebrations of Success

Snapshots of “celebrating our graduates” honor the profound academic growth of Justice Center students. The Inside‑Out BA pathway has shown remarkable impact: incarcerated individuals earning bachelor’s degrees have just a 5.6 % chance of recidivism—compared to 76.6 % without postsecondary education. Commencement photos capture resilience, determination, and systemic reform through education.

???? Community & Team‑Building Events

Team‑building images highlight collaborative workshops that foster trust, critical thinking, and empathy. From group projects to facilitated dialogues, students build skills and deepen community—key to the Justice Education Center’s restorative vision. Captions like “team‑building exercises” underscore how academic study merges with engaged scholarship and civic action.

???? Learning from Leaders

“Guest speaker session” images feature scholars, activists, and formerly incarcerated individuals sharing lived experience. Our work with partners such as Vista Del Río and Pitzer’s Community Engagement Center brings this expertise directly into the classroom. These visuals show how insight meets education and prison walls become more porous.
