5C Faculty

Dear Claremont Faculty,

Welcome! Are you interested in teaching an Inside-Out course this academic year or next? If so, please fill out this interest form no later than December if you are interested in teaching the following fall, and May if you are interested in teaching the following spring. We will assess class placement according to instructor availability and student need, prioritizing equity in every respect we can. Ultimately, the deans at each campus will make all final decisions, but we strongly recommend proposing courses that you are confident your own departments and chairs will approve. The form includes questions about:

  1. What you would like to teach (tentative course title or general topic, as well as a proposed course description)
  2. When you would like to teach (semester/year/day/time)? Options are M-F, 12:30-3:30pm or 5:30-8:30pm.

Faculty who wish to teach an Inside-Out course must complete an intensive, six-day Inside-Out training prior to the date the course begins. A dozen trainings are offered annually around the country. If you are interested in funding support to cover the cost of this training, as well as any class-associated costs you may incur, please see the section below on funding support.

To join the Justice Education Working Group and be connected with other JEI-affiliated faculty on your campus, please contact your Learning Community Coordinator. Learning Community Coordinators on each campus are the primary points of contact for all JEI-related questions and concerns, and can be contacted using the information below.

For all other JEI updates, subscribe to our mailing list here.

We appreciate your time and interest, and look forward to working together!

Funding Support

The Justice Education Initiative offers financial support for justice education-related events sponsored by faculty, staff, and student organizations at The Claremont Colleges, which may include but are not limited to: conferences, lectures, invited speakers, community engagement and art initiatives in addition to course development awards, faculty development opportunities, student-sponsored event awards, and more.

Funding categories:

  • Faculty stipends recognize the additional time and effort required for teaching community-engaged courses, workshops, and projects with regional carceral institutions and/or justice-related organizations. This stipend will support faculty with existing justice education efforts (primarily but not limited to those taking place at CRC, CIW, Camp AP, Prototypes, and Crossroads). Maximum stipend amount: $1,000. There is also a slightly higher ($500) per-course rate of pay for faculty who teach classes (including Inside-Out classes) during the summer.
  • Funding support for costs related to ongoing programs already being implemented in prison settings (i.e., workshops, faculty forums, tutoring, mentoring, literacy training, guest presentations, etc.) primarily at CRC, CIW, Camp AP, Prototypes, and Crossroads.
  • Funding support for activities on campus that support the aims of the Justice Education Initiative. Funds could be used to defray costs for activities such as guest speakers, field trips, film showings, social gatherings, etc.
  • Course development awards for justice education-related courses offered Fall 2019 – Spring 2024.

To request Justice Education Initiative funding, please email justice_education@pitzer.edu for the application. Please see the final paragraph for important information about evaluation.

Application instructions:

  • The deadline for requests under $200 are rolling; any request over $200 should be submitted per cycle deadlines for 2021-22 for priority consideration: April 1, 2021 (for Fall 2021 or Spring 2022), and November 1, 2021 (for Spring 2022). You should allow a minimum of two weeks to receive a response following submission of this form.
  • Priority will be given to events that are open to the entire Claremont Colleges community and those that also reach beyond campus to community organizations, formerly incarcerated communities, etc.
  • Priority will be given to activities that align with the aims of the Justice Education Initiative.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by email indicating the approved amount and procedures for paying honoraria and requesting reimbursements.
  • Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and are subject to available funds.
  • Grant administration queries can be addressed to justice_education@pitzer.edu

For approved requests, here are a few requirements and helpful guidelines:

  • Flyers, posters, and/or emails publicizing the event must include “Justice Education Initiative at the Claremont Colleges” as one of the sponsors.
  • An electronic copy of the flyer/email being used to publicize the event must be sent to justice_education@pitzer.edu
  • If the reimbursement of honoraria, consulting, and/or provided services is to be fully covered by Justice Education, a W9 or invoice for services must be completed and submitted for payment.
  • If the Justice Education Initiative is paying for materials, please submit receipts totaling at least the approved amount. An account number and payee name must be provided for processing the reimbursement.
  • If you are part of an existing campus entity (such as a student club, program department, etc.), please provide your campus account number.

Faculty stipends do not require the submission of event/program evaluations. But if a faculty member chooses to apply for additional, event-specific funding (whether or not they have already been approved for a stipend), they are required both to:

  1. Fill out an event/program evaluation form themselves.
  2. Have program/event participants complete one at the close of the event.

Awardees must complete and return all event evaluation forms within three (3) weeks of the event. Reimbursements will not be processed until event evaluation forms have been submitted.
