About the JEC & Inside-Out

The Inside-Out education program at the 5 C’s is based on a pedagogical approach initially created by Prof. Lori Pompa at Temple University. The idea was that traditional students would take courses taught inside a prison alongside incarcerated students. This teaching style is focused on students learning from each other across differences.
In 2018, the first Inside-Out courses through The Claremont Colleges were taught at the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, CA. Over time, the program has grown tremendously, and it is proud to be the first to offer bachelor’s Degree opportunities to incarcerated people through the Inside-Out curriculum.
