Dress Code for Visitors

It is recommended that visitors dress conservatively and with the following guidelines in mind. Inappropriate attire will be a reason to deny a visit. Any alteration to clothing once a visitor is inside the institution will be grounds for terminating the visit.

IMPORTANT: If you wear prohibited attire, you will not be allowed to enter the institution; please dress accordingly.

Note: Volunteers must also adhere to the same dress attire standards as Employees.

The following guidelines are to be applied:

  • Clothing should fit comfortably and be neat, clean, and pressed.
  • Hemlines over two inches above the top of the kneecap are not acceptable.
  • Bermuda shorts, biking pants, and miniskirts shall not be worn and are deemed unacceptable. Capri pants (loose-fitting) can be worn. The gym coach is authorized to wear shorts.
  • Clothing imprinted with phrases, pictures, etc., which may offend any person, is not appropriate and declared unacceptable. Tank, strapless, or spaghetti strap tops are unacceptable unless a jacket is worn over the top. Plunging necklines and sheer fabrics are unacceptable. Bear midriff tops are unacceptable.
  • Thongs, shower shoes, or slippers are not permitted.
  • Camouflage clothing of any color is not permitted.
  • Skintight pants or shirts shall not be worn.
  • Sweat suits, jogging suits, or gym clothing shall not be worn except for those employees participating in baton training.
  • Denim clothing similar to that worn by inmates shall not be worn.
  • Clothing resembling state-issued inmate clothing (i.e., blue chambray shirts, denim) is prohibited.
  • Shorts, sweat suits and/or sweat pants, nylon suits, or velour suits are prohibited.

Should attire appear questionable to the Gate Officer, the Gate Officer will advise the visitor to remain at the gate. At that time, the Outside Patrol Sergeant/Watch Commander will be contacted and report to the gate to determine the appropriate dress attire.

Prohibited items: Food, Chewing Gum, Cameras, Pagers, Cell Phones, iPods or MP3 Players, Writing Materials, or Books (Unless approved before entering the institution).

IMPORTANT: If you bring prohibited items, please leave them in your car before approaching the entrance building. Otherwise, staff will hold your items at the entrance until you exit the institution.
