Title: Going with the flow: The Mathematics of Fluid Motion
Abstract: Why can the depth of a river or the height of a wave tell us how fast it is moving? This lesson talks about the mathematics of fluid motion and how we can use simple, dimensional arguments to simplify complicated equations. You will perform a hands-on tank experiment and record the speed of a gravity current. We will vary the parameters that control the fluid motion to predict flow speed. We will compare our predictions to real world phenomena such as dust storms, sea breezes and avalanches.
