Number Theory Learning Seminar (Organizational Meeting)

September 3 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

An organizational meeting for this semester’s “Number Theory Learning Seminar will take place on Thursday September 3 at 4:00 PM in CGU’s Burkle Hall, Room 24.

The Seminar is geared for graduate students, undergraduates, and faculty to learn about topics in number theory which are not typically covered in traditional classes. The volunteers will take turns presenting one preselected paper within the allocated 60 minutes. These papers are relatively short — averaging less than 10 pages in length — and cover some results known mainly to researchers in the field, such as Newman’s proof of the Prime Number Theorem, Bhargava’s proof of the 15 Theorem, and Elkies’s counterexample to a conjecture of Euler. Prior knowledge of number theory is not required to understand the topics we will discuss. Seminar attendees are not required to participate in presentations, but all are encouraged.

The regular weekly meeting time will be determined at the organizational meeting. For more information, contact Maxwell Kooiker (maxwell.kooiker@cgu.edu) or Edray Goins (edray.goins@pomona.edu).
