This fall (2023), we will be reading Super Courses: The Future of Teaching and Learning.
Super Courses is the story of a new breed of amazingly innovative courses that inspire students and improve learning. Teaching with Writing in the Age of ChatGPT with Andrea Scott
Teaching with Writing in the Age of ChatGPT with Andrea Scott
September 11, 2023 9:30 am - 10:45 am
Zoom
The arrival of new platforms like ChatGPT hit academia by storm this past winter. Suddenly, technology had evolved far enough to produce plausible academic prose in a variety of genres. Why should our students write essays if software could do it for them? If we look past the alarmist headlines, we see that generative AI invites us to reflect on questions of concern to us all. Why do we assign writing in our seminars? What do we want students to learn? How are new technologies changing writing and reading processes—on our campuses and beyond? This workshop brings together faculty to reflect on current developments and articulate theoretically-informed principles for our assignments and our teaching. The goal is to give participants a framework to guide the choices they will make in the weeks and months to come.

Foundations of Inclusive Teaching: Classroom Activities
Foundations of Inclusive Teaching: Classroom Activities
September 26, 2023 10:00 am - 11:15 am
Room 100 at Yuhaaviatam Center for Global Health, 175 E 8th St, Claremont, CA 91711, USA
Inclusive teaching, for me, means fostering a sense of belonging so that students are willing to offer their unique contributions to our collective learning. It also means creating conditions for interconnectedness so that students value the unique contributions of their peers. In this workshop, we will explore classroom activities that “draw forth the best in those gathered,” including “the best of what it means to be a human being” (Pompa 2013, 23). Concrete examples/best practices will be culled from the scholarship on teaching and learning, as well as from participants’ own experiments with inclusive pedagogies.
