CTL Faculty Co-Director Search

Background and Context

The Claremont Colleges Center for Teaching and Learning serves as a hub for both practical teaching support and meaningful discussions about teaching as an intellectual endeavor. We aim to create a vibrant and interconnected teaching community by offering valuable resources and programs that enhance the effectiveness of teaching. Through our initiatives, we further the colleges’ mission by building both individual teachers’ and the institutions’ capacity to strengthen inclusive, student-centered pedagogy. We support both student and faculty success.

  1. Our goals are to:
    1. Promote a community culture of life-long learning and commitment to effective teaching.
    2. Enable and support faculty and instructional staff to learn about, implement, and advance evidence-based, student-centered, inclusive teaching and learning practices and technologies in every stage of their careers.
    3. Build and maintain a supportive community for teachers at the colleges, where instructors can share their teaching, receive feedback, and learn from each other.
    4. Advocate for and support Claremont College institutional units promoting equity and inclusion in both student learning and faculty/staff experience.

In pursuit of these goals the CTL:

    1. Develops opportunities to learn about evidence-based, student-centered, inclusive teaching and learning practices and technologies.
    2. Celebrates and amplifies impactful teaching practices in our community by creating opportunities for instructors to share evidence of their teaching development.
    3. Connects faculty, departments, committees, and other campus groups, and serves as a central resource on teaching-related needs.
    4. Supports existing and emerging campus initiatives related to effective teaching and inclusive excellence.

More information about the CTL is available at http://teaching.claremont.edu.

The Faculty Co-Director position is a multi-year appointment (either two- or three-year terms). The duties of Faculty Co-Directors are intended to be equivalent to a half-time appointment. FCDs receive one course release per semester from their home institution during their term, spending approximately 15 hours per week working for the CTL. Faculty Co-Directors are also expected to contribute approximately one month of their time to the CTL during the summer and are compensated 1/9th of their base salary as a summer stipend for that work.

Job Purpose

In concert with the rest of the CTL staff, the Faculty Co-Directors will support the goals of the CTL through these three essential duties and responsibilities:

Faculty Co-Directors (FCD) of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) support the mission of the CTL in three core domains:

  1. Designing and organizing events and resources for faculty and instructional staff. This includes:
  • Planning, promoting, leading, and facilitating workshops, seminars, reading groups, and learning communities.
  • Assisting in the monitoring and assessment of events.
  • Staying up-to-date on current research on inclusive pedagogy, educational technology, and/or high-impact teaching practices relevant to the Claremont Colleges.
  1. Providing faculty and instructional staff with personalized support on their teaching. This includes:
  • Meeting individually with faculty to provide support on their teaching and learning and connecting them with expertise they need.
  • Upon invitation from faculty, observing their classrooms and providing support and feedback.
  • Developing relationships with faculty to learn about their teaching and learning needs and goals.
  1. Catalyzing collaboration and community across the Claremont Colleges on matters relating to teaching and learning. This includes:
  • Leading events meant to formally and informally connect teachers to each other, such as learning communities and social events.
  • Coordinating with teaching-related units of the Claremont Colleges such as Teaching and Learning Committees or DEI working groups.
  • Working with departments on curricular design projects or implementation of new instructional strategies or educational technology.
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining a network of faculty expertise at the Claremont Colleges on various topics and connecting faculty to one another.

Additionally, Faculty Co-Directors may also support the Staff Director of the CTL in the domains of Strategic Planning and Operational Effectiveness. They may:

  • Engage in strategic planning exercises for the CTL.
  •  Seek out and complete proposals for granting opportunities related to teaching or faculty development.
  • Execute assessment and evaluation practices to guide future programming.
  • Manage regular communication with faculty and other stakeholders of the CTL.
  • Assist in reporting to grant agencies, stakeholders, and college leadership.

Faculty Co-Directors of the CTL will gain experience in faculty development, improve their own teaching using insights from educational research, develop their leadership skills, and learn how to collaborate across the Claremont Colleges. This position is more than a service opportunity—it is also an opportunity for faculty to advance their own teaching and scholarship, especially if it connects to teaching and learning.
