Program Expectations
If selected for the MMUF program, fellows are expected to participate fully in all aspects of the MMUF program. Commitments include:
- MMUF Orientation
- During the summer before junior year, participation in the Claremont Colleges MMUF Summer Program: Attend regular cohort meetings/workshops; complete assigned work in between those meetings; participate in one-on-one meetings with the MMUF team; and work with the Faculty Research Mentor to develop the beginning stages of a research project. This summer program can be attended remotely up until the MMUF Retreat.
- MMUF Retreat immediately prior to the Fall semester. Fellows may have to return to campus early.
- Regular attendance at the MMUF seminar (.25 credits) through the junior and senior years. Seminar is a weekly class.
- Meet regularly with the MMUF team (Faculty Research Mentor, Graduate Student Mentor, etc.) throughout the junior and senior years. One-on-one meetings average about one meeting per week.
- During the summer before the senior year, participate in a formal research program at another university. Participation may involve residing at another institution for the length of the program.
- Participate in a roundtable at the MMUF Regional Conference during the junior year and present research at the MMUF Regional Conference during the senior year. These conferences are generally held in November each year.
- Engage in activities that prepare one for application to and success in a doctoral program. Some of these activities, such as presenting at conferences, will require travel.
- Complete milestone assignments each semester.
- Apply to PhD programs in a Mellon-eligible field during the senior year or at a time that results in you enrolling in a PhD program within 39 months of graduation.
If a student decides to not apply to PhD programs in a Mellon-eligible field, they will withdraw from the MMUF program.
Each semester, there are clear outcomes fellows must meet in order to continue as a fellow in good standing. If a fellow does not complete milestone assignments, achieve program outcomes, and/or does not fulfill the expectations outlined above, they will withdraw from the MMUF program.
Fellows are not allowed to study abroad during the fall semester of their junior year. We can discuss options on a case-by-case basis.

FAQ: Program Expectations
Q: I have a concern about one of the program expectations listed above (for example, I want to attend a study abroad opportunity that is only available in the fall or I have an absolute commitment on the date of orientation). What do I do?
A: Please discuss your concerns with our program director, so we can see if permission can be granted for an exception. The program is carefully sequenced to provide maximum support for our fellows, but there are some instances where an exception can be granted.
