We have now met with close to fifty individuals from across the 7Cs to begin envisioning a cohesive consortial data science initiative. Many of you participated in these early conversations, and we are deeply grateful for your time and engagement. At the bottom of this post you can view assorted project ideas that emerged from this interview process.

We’re now ready to report out on what we heard during those interviews and to imagine together how our collective efforts, resources, and talents can best be harnessed to support research and curricular development at The Claremont Colleges.

To that end, and in concert with the Academic Deans Committee, we’re planning three Envisioning Data Science charrettes. These will be held during finals week:

Please RSVP here if you are able to join us for one of these three offerings. Lunch will be provided.  We will gather at the Hive (130 E. 7th Street), Studio 1.

Data Science Project Ideas

  • All-hands-on-deck event: Day of Coding/Data Science Summit/7C competition/Cyberinfrastructure Day
  • Articulate a coherent Data Science curriculum that advances beyond the introductory level (e.g., major, minor, microcredentials, certificate)
  • Build out a superstructure (and admin support) for data storage and processing (e.g., computer cluster, HIPAA-compliant storage)
  • Co-teach courses
  • Create a capstone experience with community/industry partners; offer 7C Data Science Clinic
  • Create a data science alliance with all the colleges in LA county
  • Create a website for Claremont Data Science
  • Create an Intro to DS course that can serve all Claremont students
  • Cross-list courses as DATA
  • Cultivate and leverage relationships with industry partners and non-profit orgs
  • Distribute a roster of interested people, their data, their tools, their questions
  • Equalize/coordinate shared access to labs and tools for students across the colleges – including being able to access their software remotely
  • Establish a “Find an expert” referral system
  • Establish a shared pool of funds to support collaborative work
  • Establish an Internship or Fellows program (in house)
  • Establish brown bags/works-in-progress
  • Establish TA opportunities for CGU students (e.g., Grad TAs could bring DS modules into your existing course)
  • Host an annual research conference
  • Host informal drop-in events: Research Salon, “Open Mic Night,” happy hour
  • Launch a center (with staff) that connects people, connects resources, offers training, offers consulting, facilitates grant writing, coordinates initiatives
  • Launch a Colloquium/Speaker Series
  • Launch a course redesign initiative to bring data science into existing classes and labs (e.g., modules)
  • Offer a half-semester course in R
  • Offer an intensive academic program students could complete during a summer
  • Offer summer research opportunities
  • Offer thesis projects in data science
  • Offer training for faculty (e.g., skills seminars, 1-week summer intensive)

We are eager to learn which of the many proposed ideas capture your interest and enthusiasm!
