Sequential: A Meditation on Recurrence (Prof. Ghassan Sarkis, Pomona College)
April 12, 2023 @ 4:15 pm - 5:30 pm
Title: Sequential: A Meditation on Recurrence
Speaker: Ghassan Sarkis, Department of Mathematics, Pomona College
Abstract: Though I will share some adventures in sequence-generating neural networks just for fun, the majority of this talk will be concerned with Fibonacci sequences modulo $p$ and $p^2$ from data-inflected and number-theoretic perspectives, including questions about periods of the modular sequence (how long before it repeats itself?) and associated frequencies (how many of each residue is there?) also just for fun. Most of the presentation should be understandable to math students with exposure to linear algebra and modular arithmetic, and will include some suggested paths they may want to pursue in their own research as well.
Ghassan Sarkis is an Associate Professor of Mathematics & Statistics at Pomona College to his great surprise. His training is in number theory, though he enjoys dabbling in combinatorics, data science, and some other puzzles that cross his path. He is very excited to discover what happens next.
