About our panelists:

Anya Zimmerman-Smith, CMC ’21

Anya (CMC ’21) is a Human-Centered Design consultant on the Northern California Care Experience team at Kaiser Permanente. While at CMC, she led metalsmithing workshops at the Hive and majored in HCD. Through working with the Brain Tumor Network in the Advanced HCD class, and her thesis working with the UCSF Brain Tumor Center, Anya became passionate about improving patient experience in healthcare through the use of HCD and co-design with medical providers. At Kaiser Permanente, Anya supports projects ranging from improving test result design and in-patient physician and patient communication to the development of a new patient experience management system. During her free time, she sews clothing and enjoys volunteering at a goat dairy.

Emma Sheridan, Pomona ’21

Ever since my introduction to design thinking at the Claremont College’s The Hive (Pomona ’21), I’ve been captivated by its adaptability and transformative power across diverse fields. Throughout my career, I’ve harnessed this versatile toolkit to integrate design thinking principles into product management, driving the creation of impactful products and fostering collaborative, engaged teams. Currently, I’m a product manager at Microsoft building digital experiences for our commercial customers to manage their Microsoft 365 subscriptions through the admin center. When I’m away from the computer, I enjoy reading fiction, traveling to new places for inspiration, and moving my body with yoga, cycling, weights, or a neighborhood walk.

August Cosinuke, Pomona ’23

I graduated from Pomona in May, 2023. I front-loaded a major in Philosophy, Politics, & Economics and spent my last few semesters studying design at the Hive and elsewhere. My thesis was an ethical analysis of gamification in the workplace – basically, are we harming people by designing their workplaces to improve their productivity?  I spent my free time leading outdoor trips with OTL, playing ultimate frisbee on the Claremont Braineaters, and commissioning intramural baseball.

Nowadays, I am a User Experience Designer and Researcher at EO, a clinical cannabis health-tech startup. My job is to figure out how we can improve our patients’ experiences using eo products and services. I do a lot of user interviews and test many prototypes. Lastly, I am obsessed with board games, am pro sticky notes, and live in Chinatown, Manhattan.
