Sculpting Earth and Sea: A Studio Visit with Joe Skoby

March 16, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

This semester, we are excited to present to you Part 1 of a Benton Art Museum, Pomona History Department (Professor Arash Khazeni) and Hive collaboration: Art After Hours with Joe Skoby.

Join us for a visit to the studio of Joe Skoby, a Southern California ceramicist inspired by the nature of his native state. Skoby’s ceramics recall his intimate dance with the ocean as a lifelong surfer, a pure form of self-expression that disappears after each wave. Finding inspiration in traditional Japanese craft and the concept of wabi sabi, Skoby’s ceramics embody an aesthetic principle where roughness, imperfections, and impermanence become the birthplace of unique beauty.

This virtual exhibit offers a window into the process of his craft of hand-thrown and carved vessels.

Join Joe Skoby again on Thursday to craft your own unique piece!
