Faculty Course Grants

The Hive supports and fosters faculty incorporating making activities and infusing creative collaboration into courses at The Claremont Colleges. The faculty making activity grant program supports classes that enable creative growth within and between 5C students as a regular practice in the class experience, and within and between 5C faculty collaboratively teaching courses and coursework.

We support faculty who need access to creative resources such as funding for making supplies, access to Hive materials and equipment, use of Hive spaces, and mentoring for their teaching and their students’ creative endeavors.

The Hive prioritizes faculty making activity grant proposals that:

  • Navigate between the real and the abstract, and between understanding and making
  • Feature experiential components of creating and making
  • Nurture connections between colleges and is highly interdisciplinary
  • Encourage collaboration among students and faculty
  • Present ambitious and ambiguous challenges
  • Incorporate all or most of the Hive’s core principles

We encourage faculty to hold classes or activities in the Hive spaces, display output in the Hive, and participate in an annual celebration of making at the Hive.

We have received a variety of creative and impactful proposals this semester but have reached the limit of the resources we can offer. While we work with current projects, we invite you and your class to visit the Hive and exercise you and your students’ creative passion with the many materials and tools we have in the space.
