Welcome to the Weekly Roundup!

Welcome to our new Instagram feature, the Weekly Roundup! It is a collection of inspiring stories, podcasts, TV shows, movies, books, etc. that we feel fits with the Hive’s mission. Each week, we center the Weekly Roundup around one of our six core principles. Follow us on Instagram at @hive_5C to catch our Weekly Roundups each Monday to see what we found inspiring, interesting, and motivational to get us through the week ahead. If you don’t have Instagram, you can also check out all of our Weekly Roundup features here, on our website. Do you have something you’d like to share with other Hivers for future Weekly Roundups? You can definitely share it with us on our Instagram!

We highlighted NPR’s Hidden Brain podcast; Daniel Coyle’s book, The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups; and a new Netflix series, The Mind, Explained for the first Weekly Roundup. Check out what we found interesting in each of these pieces below.

NPR’s Hidden Brain podcast

Are you in the library studying for your Biology midterm, and no matter how much you care about the difference between protozoa and bacteria, you can’t help but check that text about how good the fish tacos are at Scripps tonight? Well, sorry to break it to you, but those fish tacos just broke your focus. Listen to NPR’s Hidden Brain podcast episode, “You 2.0: The Value of ‘Deep Work’ in an Age of Distraction” to learn about how to create and sustain what Cal Newport calls “deep work,” the most productive work mindset. Build up some tricks and tips to sit yourself down, get FOCUSED, and ace that bio exam. 😉

The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups by Daniel Coyle

Why are certain groups greater than the sum of their parts, while others end up to be less? Daniel Coyle’s book, The Culture Code, takes us inside Seal Team Six, the Upright Citizens Brigade improv group, the San Antonio Spurs, and many more to explain the secrets of highly successful groups. What is so special about the way Gregg Popovich coaches the San Antonio Spurs? What makes the United Citizens Brigade one of the most sought after improv groups in the world? Why are kindergarteners so damn good at making marshmallow towers out of spaghetti sticks? Daniel Coyle has the answers, and he’s willing to share!

The Mind, Explained a Netflix series

Netflix’s new limited series, The Mind, Explained, tackles different phenomena such as memory, dreams, and anxiety to explain how they work and affect our minds. This week, inspired by our core principle, Cultivate Generative Mindsets, we’d like to draw your attention to the episode on Mindfulness. In this easily digestible, 20-minute episode, learn the benefits of mindfulness meditation and get your mind centered and ready to ideate and play! Plus, you get to listen to Emma Stone narrate. 🙂 If you are interested in learning more about mindfulness meditation and starting to practice it on your own, check out the book Bliss More by Light Watkins.
